Sir Alexander Allan, 1st Baronet
Sir Alexander Allan, 1st Baronet (c. 1764 – 14 September 1820) was a British painter and politician. He joined the East India Company as a cadet in 1779 and had been promoted to captain when he served in the Fourth Mysore War in 1798 as Deputy Quartermaster-General. He painted numerous water colours of the campaign. On his return to England he was elected Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for Berwick-upon-Tweed (UK Parliament constituency), Berwick-upon-Tweed from 1803 to 1806 and 1807 to 1820. He was a List of East India Company directors, director of the East India Company from 1814 to 1817 and 1819 to his death. He was made a baronet on 18 September 1819, of Kingsgate, Kent, Kingsgate in the County of Kent. The title became extinct upon his death in 1820. He never married. Alexander Allan was a Scottish mechanical engineer. He was born at Montrose, Angus, in 1809 and died at Scarborough, Yorkshire on 2 June 1891. Biography Alan was born in Montrose, Angus, Scotland in 1809. He undertook a apprenticeship to Mr. Gibb, a millwright. In 1832 aged about 23 he took a position at Robert Stephenson and Company, Newcastle upon Tyne. By 1834 he had moved to Liverpool and taken up a position with George Forrester and Company who were about to begin building railway locomotives. Allan was works manager for George Forrester and Company until 1840. He was the engineer sent for a year to supervise the maintenance of the three Forrester engines ''Vauxhall'', ''Dublin'' and ''Kingstown'' for the first year of their service at Dublin and Kingstown Railway in 1834. Florence Parry Heide (February 27, 1919 – October 23, 2011) was a bestselling American children's writer. Early life Born in Pittsburgh, Heide spent most of her childhood in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Her father, who was a banker, died when Heide was two years old. After two years of studying at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, she transferred to UCLA, graduating in 1939. Alexander Allen (23 September 1814 – 6 November 1842) was an English writer and linguist who specialised in studies of Greece. Biography He was the son of John Allen, born at Hackney 23 September 1814. He was educated at his father's school (the Madras House Grammar School, at Hackney) and the University of London. On his father's death he carried on the grammar school. Allen obtained, in 1840, the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Leipzig. Captain Alexander "Sandy" Allan (26 February 1780 – 18 March 1854), was the Scottish sea captain and businessman who founded the Allan Shipping Line in 1819. Rising from shoemaker to shipping magnate in little more than thirty years, Allan retired in 1839 having made a fortune and created a transatlantic dynasty. He is recognised as one of the major contributors to Scotland's commercial interests in the early 19th century, and to the establishment of the Firth of Clyde as an international centre of shipping. During the Napoleonic Wars his brig ''Jean'' – so named for his wife – held the record for the fastest crossing between the Firth of Clyde and Quebec City.
