Alex Lightbody
Alex Lightbody (born 1966) is an international lawn bowler, who has represented Ireland (combined) and Northern Ireland at international level. Bowls career Lightbody won the Irish National Bowls Championships singles in 1992. Trailing in the final against Gary McCloy 14–9, he came back to secure a 21–15 victory. In doing so he became the first Bangor bowler since Billy Tate to win the title. Newtownards
Newtownards is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies at the most northern tip of Strangford Lough, 10 miles (16 km) east of Belfast, on the Ards Peninsula. County Down
County Down () is one of the six counties of Northern Ireland, one of the nine counties of Ulster and one of the traditional thirty-two counties of Ireland. It covers an area of and has a population of 531,665. It borders County Antrim to the north, the Irish Sea to the east, County Armagh to the west, and County Louth across Carlingford Lough to the southwest. British Isles Bowls Championships
The British Isles Bowls Championships is a tournament held between the champions of their respective nations, England Scotland, Wales, combined Ireland and more recently Guernsey and Jersey. It was first held in 1960 although the triples event did not start until 1977. The women's events started in June 1972, with the triples starting in 1982. The first women's singles winner was Lilian Nicholas of Wales. The first men's singles winner was Kenneth Coulson of England and the legendary David Bryant (bowls), David Bryant MBE holds the record for the most singles titles with four. The tournament is held the year after each of the National champions have been crowned. The 2020 edition was initially cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but because there were no National Championships held during 2020 (also due to the pandemic) the 2020 edition was rescheduled for 2021. Irish National Bowls Championships
The Irish National Bowls Championships combines Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Traditionally the game was played mainly in Northern Ireland but the Kenilworth Bowling Club of Dublin joined the Irish Bowls Association in 1906 which prompted the merger into one team. With the exception of the Commonwealth Games players continue to represent a combined Ireland team. The singles championship is called the Dr Rusk Cup named after Dr John Rusk, President of the IBA and the singles representative player at the Lawn Bowls at the 1934 British Empire Games. The Pairs is called the T.W McMullan Cup, the Triples is known as the Charlie Clawson Cup and the Fours is known as the C.L MacKean Cup. Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty". It is played on a bowling green, which may be flat (for "flat-green bowls") or convex or uneven (for "crown green bowls"). Gary McCloy
Gary Samuel McCloy (born 28 May 1969) is an Irish international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career He won a bronze medal in the fours at the 2000 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Johannesburg. He was also part of the fours team that secured the gold medal for Northern Ireland at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the other members were Ian McClure, Martin McHugh and Neil Booth. In 2007 he won the pairs silver medal at the Atlantic Bowls Championships. William Tate (bowls)
William Tate (1918–1977) was an Irish international lawn bowler. Bowls career He won a bronze medal in the fours at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh with John Higgins, Harold Stevenson and Edward Gordon. Four years later he represented Northern Ireland for a second successive Commonwealth Games in 1974. He was also part of the fours team that just missed out on a medal at the 1972 World Outdoor Bowls Championship when a combined Ireland team finished in fourth place in the fours competition. David Corkill
David Corkill is a former international lawn and indoor bowler and current sports commentator born on 15 February 1960. Bowls career David, from Belfast in Northern Ireland, started bowling at an early age in Tullycarnet Park where he played for Gilnahirk. He joined the Knock outdoor club and won the Irish National Bowls Championships Fours title in 1977 and the singles title in 1980 and 1988. He also won the singles at the British Isles Bowls Championships in 1981.
