Alex Lang
Alex Lang (12 March 1888 – 9 July 1943) was an Australian rules footballer who played with the Carlton Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Despite being a three-time premiership player, Lang will be remembered by history as the joint record holder for the longest player ban received from the tribunal. Football Recruited by coach Jack Worrall in 1905, Lang debuted for Carlton in the opening round of the following season. He played as a rover, winning premierships in his first three years at the club and in 1909 was voted by ''The Australasian'' newspaper as the most 'Outstanding player in the VFL'. During the 1910 final series, Lang became involved in a match-fixing scandal after being dropped from the side for the Second Semi-Final, against South Melbourne. Sydney Swans
The Sydney Swans are a professional Australian rules football club based in Sydney, New South Wales. The men's team competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), and the women's team in the AFL Women's (AFLW). The Swans also field a reserves men's team in the Victorian Football League (VFL). The club's origins trace back to 21 March 1873, when a meeting was held at the Clarendon Hotel in South Melbourne to establishing a junior football club, to be called the South Melbourne Football Club. Doug Fraser (Australian Footballer)
Douglas Stewart Fraser (7 December 1886 – 24 February 1919) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A Yarraville Football Club premiership player in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), Fraser broke into a strong Carlton team in the 1910 VFL season and established a place in the side as a follower. He kicked three goals in a win over Geelong at Princes Park. Fraser is best remembered for his involvement in the bribery scandal that hit the league during the 1910 finals series. Together with Doug Gillespie and his childhood friend Alex Lang, Fraser was withdrawn from the Semi Final against South Melbourne while Carlton and the league investigated allegations that they had accepted bribes to 'play dead'. Doug Gillespie
Douglas James Gillespie (13 December 1887 – 6 January 1947) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family One of the eight children (five boys and three girls) of James Gillespie (1856–1913), and Mary Gillespie (1859–1924), née Gallagher, Douglas James Gillespie was born at the Melbourne Zoo, in Royal Park, in Parkville, Victoria on 14 December 1887. His younger twin brother, Dave Gillespie, also played for Carlton (90 games from 1906 to 1912, including the 1906 and 1907 premierships). Match Fixing
In organized sports, match fixing is the act of playing or officiating a match with the intention of achieving a pre-determined result, violating the rules of the game and often the law. There are many reasons why match fixing might take place, including receiving bribes from bookmakers or sports bettors, and blackmail. Competitors may also intentionally perform poorly to gain a future advantage, such as a better draft pick or to face an easier opponent in a later round of competition.
