Alex L. Nicol
Alexander Lee Nicol (March 13, 1895 – July 22, 1967) was an American political figure on the state level who served as Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly during its 1949–50 session. Born in the small Wisconsin city of Sparta, he served as an officer in the United States Army during World War I and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. As a member of Robert M. La Follette's Progressive Party, he was clerk of Monroe County from 1921 to 1939 and, after joining the Republican Party Republican Party is a name used by many political parties around the world, though the term most commonly refers to the United States' Republican Party. The Republican Party, also referred to as the GOP ("Grand Old Party"), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States. Wisconsin State Assembly
The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Since 1973, the state has been divided into 99 Assembly districts apportioned amongst the state based on population as determined by the decennial census, for a total of 99 representatives.
