Alex Harsley
Alex Harsley (born 1938 in Rock Hill, South Carolina) is an American photographer, multimedia artist and founder of the Fourth Street Photo Gallery who lives and works in New York City. Early life and education Harsley was born to a Methodist mother in Rock Hill and began working on the family cotton and peanut farm as a child during World War II. He met his father, a soldier, in 1945. Harsley moved to New York City in 1948. Career Harsley purchased his first real camera, an Exakta XV, in 1959. His first job in New York was a bike messenger, allowing him to multitask as a street photographer. Harsley was the first black photographer in the New York City District Attorney’s office under Frank Hogan. In 1959 he had his first photo exhibition in Harlem. Paul Robeson Jr
Paul Leroy Robeson Jr. (November 2, 1927 – April 26, 2014) was an American author, archivist and historian. Biography Robeson was born in Brooklyn to lawyer, activist and singer Paul Robeson and Eslanda Goode Robeson. As his family moved to Europe, he grew up in England (visiting the St Mary's Town and Country School in London) and Moscow, in the Soviet Union. In Moscow, he attended an elite school. The Robesons returned to the United States in 1939 to live first in Harlem, New York, and after 1941 in Enfield, Connecticut. Robeson graduated from Enfield High School and attended Cornell University, where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1949. Spencer Tunick
Spencer Tunick (born January 1, 1967) is an American photographer best known for organizing large-scale nude shoots. Since 1994, he has photographed over 75 human installations around the world. Life and career Spencer Tunick was born in Middletown, Orange County, New York into a Jewish family. His father Earl owned a keychain photo-viewer franchise in the Catskills. Abelardo Morell
Abelardo Morell (born 1948, Havana, Cuba) is a contemporary artist widely known for turning rooms into camera obscuras and then capturing the marriage of interior and exterior in large format photographs. He is also known for his 'tent-camera,' a device he invented to merge landscapes with the texture and composition of the ground where he places his camera and tripod to record the simultaneity of close and far, majestic and mundane. Formerly, Morell was a professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Life and career Morell and his family fled Cuba in 1962, moving to New York City. Andres Serrano
Andres Serrano (born August 15, 1950) is an American photographer and artist. His work, often considered transgressive art, includes photos of corpses and uses feces and bodily fluids. His '' Piss Christ'' (1987) is a red-tinged photograph of a crucifix submerged in a glass container of what was purported to be the artist's own urine. Vernon Alphonsus Reid (born 22 August 1958) is an English-born American guitarist and songwriter. Terry Roger Adkins (May 9, 1953 – February 8, 2014) was an American artist. He was Professor of Fine Arts in the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. Early life Adkins was born in Washington, D.C., on May 9, 1953, into a musical household. His father, Robert H. Cynthia MacAdams (born Cynthia Rose Adams, September 5, 1939) is an American actress and photographer. She is recognized for her black and white portraiture, use of natural light and infrared photography, and images of sacred architecture. MacAdams moved to New York City in 1961 for a career in theater. When offered a film role in ''Wild in the Streets'' in 1968 she moved to Hollywood. Ellis (Eli) Reed (born 1946) is an American photographer and photojournalist. Reed was the first full-time black photographer employed by Magnum Agency and the author of several books, including ''Black In America''. Several of the photographs from that project have been recognized in juried shows and exhibitions. Reed is a former Nieman Fellow at Harvard University (1982–83) and is currently the clinical professor of photojournalism at The University of Texas at Austin. The Whitney Biennial is a biennial exhibition of contemporary American art, typically by young and lesser known artists, on display at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, United States.
