The current mayor is Martin Connelly. Some 850 local bodies were amalgamated into 86 local authorities, made up of regional and territorial levels. Background The last major local government reform was carried out through the abolition of provincial government. With effect of 1 January 1877, local government was vested in elected borough and county councils. The Counties Bill of 1876 created 63 counties out of the rural parts of the former provinces. Over the years, many new bodies were set up. Some of these bodies were multi-purpose, whilst others (for example harbour boards) were single-purpose. The Local Government Act 1974 consolidated the previous law relating to local government that applied to territorial local authorities, regional and district council bodies. The district comprises the southernmost part of the Wairarapa, and is part of the Wellington Region. Features The district comprises the floodplain of the Ruamahanga River and the associated Lake Wairarapa, as well as the long southern stretch of Palliser Bay. To the west of the plains rise the eastern slopes of the Remutaka Range, the crest of which forms the western boundary of the district, while the Aorangi Range lies to the southeast. The southernmost point of the North Island, Cape Palliser, is in the South Wairarapa. While it is predominantly rural, the South Wairarapa has three towns. The two largest towns, almost identical in population, are Greytown and Featherston. Greytown is where Arbor Day was first celebrated in New Zealand. She was the first woman Mayor of South Wairarapa, serving in the role for 12 years between 2004 and 2016. Personal life Staples was born in Featherston, New Zealand. She runs a small manufacturing business based in Featherston and a Wellington IT consulting company. Career Staples was a member of the Featherston community board. She was elected Mayor of South Wairarapa in 2004, becoming the district's first female mayor. After retiring from the mayoralty in 2016 she ran for a position on the Greater Wellington Regional Council, where she was elected deputy-chair.
