Alessandra Resende
Alessandra Nobre Resende (born March 5, 1975) is a Brazilian javelin thrower. She is a two-time Ibero-American and a four-time South American champion for her category. Resende, however, narrowly missed out of the medal podium, when she placed fifth in the final at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, with a best throw of 57.95 metres. The women's javelin throw at the 2008 Summer Olympics took place on 19–21 August at the Beijing National Stadium. The qualifying standards were 60.50 m (A standard) and 56.00 m (B standard). Mariya Abakumova held the lead from her first throw, with Barbora Špotáková the only other competitor within 3 metres. Abakumova improved to 70.78 on her fourth throw. Christina Obergföll took third place, and Goldie Sayers took fourth (with a British national record); both of these positions were gained from their first round throws with no improvement thereafter. Then Špotáková threw 71.42 on her final throw to win the gold medal, with Abakumova taking silver. Eight years after the competition, the IOC retested samples from the event in connection with the Russian doping scandal. The athletics at the 1997 Summer Universiade took place in the Stadio Cibali in Catania, Sicily (Italy) at the end of August 1997, shortly after the World Championships in Athens, Greece. New events were the women's hammer throw, pole vault and half marathon competition. The marathon was dropped from the programme in favour of the half distance. A total of 23 men's and 22 women's events were contested (the difference being that steeplechase was held for men only). The United States topped the athletics medal table (as it had in 1995) with a total of 21 medals, eight of them gold.
