Aleppo Offensive (November–December 2016)
The Aleppo offensive (November–December 2016), code named Operation Dawn of Victory by government forces, was a successful military offensive launched by the Syrian Armed Forces and allied groups against rebel-held districts in Aleppo. The offensive came after the end of the moratorium on air strikes by Russia, and the Russian Armed Forces again conducted heavy air and cruise missile strikes against rebel positions throughout northwestern Syria. The offensive resulted in government forces taking control of all rebel-controlled parts of eastern and southern Aleppo, and the evacuation of the remaining rebel forces. The offensive was described as a potential turning point in the Syrian Civil War. Jaysh Halab
The Jaysh Halab ( ar, جيش حلب, lit=Army of Aleppo) was a coalition of Syrian rebel groups based in rebel-held areas inside the city of Aleppo, Syria. The coalition was created by Hashim al-Sheikh, the former general commander of Ahrar ash-Sham with the intent of unifying various rebel groups in Aleppo. After the announcement, nothing was heard of the group until December 2016. Syrian Marines
Faouj Maghawir al-Bahr ( ar, فوج مغاوير البحر, Faouj Maghawir al-Bahr, Marines Regiment) or the Syrian Marines is a military unit based in the Latakia Governorate. It has participated in operations in the Syrian Civil War. In February 2016, the Syrian Marines participated in a Latakia offensive alongside Syrian government forces. In March 2016, a large number of Syrian Marine convoys were deployed to the Battle of Palmyra from northern Latakia. On 25 November 2016, several units of the SSNP and Syrian marines arrived to Aleppo city in participation of Operation Dawn of Victory. Most of them were redeployed from the Latakia governorate. The Syrian Republican Guard ( ar, الْحَرَسُ الْجُمْهُورِيُّ, ''al-Ḥaras al-Jumhūriyy''), also known as the Presidential Guard, is an elite 25,000 man mechanized division, although it may actually approach corps size with around 60,000 guardsman. The 4th Armoured Division ( ar, الفرقة الرابعة, al-Firqa ar-Rābiʿah) is an elite formation of the Syrian Army whose primary purpose is to defend the Syrian government from internal and external threats. Abu al-Abd Ashidaa is a Syrian rebel commander, believed to be an Aleppo native, and former head of the Aleppo-based Army of Aleppo rebel coalition that included several Syrian rebel groups including various Free Syrian Army factions as well as Ahrar al-Sham and the Levant Front.
