Alepisaurus Paronai
''Alepisaurus paronai'' is an extinct species of lancetfish known from a fossil skull found in Middle Miocene-aged strata in Piedmont, Italy. The skull is very similar in anatomy and dimensions to that of the extant long-snouted lancetfish. The specific name honors one Professor Carlo Fabrizio Parona, a friend and personal mentor of its describer, Geremia d'Erasmo. The Miocene ( ) is the first geological epoch of the Neogene Period and extends from about (Ma). Lancetfish
Lancetfishes are large oceanic predatory fishes in the genus ''Alepisaurus'' ("scaleless lizard") in the monogeneric family Alepisauridae. Lancetfishes grow up to in length. Very little is known about their biology, though they are widely distributed in all oceans, except the polar seas. Specimens have been recorded as far north as Greenland. They are often caught as bycatch by vessels long-lining for tuna. The generic name is from Greek ''a-'' meaning "without", ' meaning "scale", and ''sauros'' meaning "lizard". In the geologic timescale the Ypresian is the oldest age (geology), age or lowest stage (stratigraphy), stratigraphic stage of the Eocene. London Clay
The London Clay Formation is a marine geological formation of Ypresian (early Eocene Epoch, c. 56–49 million years ago) age which crops out in the southeast of England. The London Clay is well known for its fossil content. The fossils from the lower Eocene rocks indicate a moderately warm climate, the tropical or subtropical flora. Though sea levels changed during the deposition of the clay, the habitat was generally a lush forest – perhaps like in Indonesia or East Africa today – bordering a warm, shallow ocean. The London Clay is a stiff bluish clay which becomes brown when weathered and oxidized. Nodular lumps of pyrite are frequently found in the clay layers. Polymerichthys
''Polymerichthys nagurai'' is an extinct, superficially eel-like alepisauroid from the Middle Miocene of Japan. The holotype specimen, no. 6599, was originally collected by Masayasu Nagura, a suzuri maker, around 1927. The specimen demonstrates several features typical of other families of Alepisauroidei, including head anatomy very similar to the daggertooths of Anotopteridae, and a well-developed dorsal fin similar to that of the lancetfish of Alepisauridae. Etymology The generic name literally translates as "many meristic fish," in reference to how the fish has numerous meristics units, including how the dorsal fin, which runs down the length of the body starting from behind the head, has somewhere between 300 and 350 rays, and how it has at least 186 vertebrae.
