Alemany Maze
Alemany Maze is the name given to the interchange between the James Lick Freeway (U.S. Route 101, US 101) and the John F. Foran Freeway ( Interstate 280, I-280) in the city of San Francisco. An alternative name for this highway feature is the Alemany Interchange. History The Alemany Maze gets its name from Alemany Boulevard, which is named for Joseph Sadoc Alemany, who in 1853 became the first Archbishop of San Francisco. The Alemany Maze is an interchange that originally controlled the separation of traffic travelling between the James Lick Freeway, Bayshore Boulevard, and Alemany Boulevard. The former US 101 Bypass, which followed Bayshore Boulevard to the south, separated from the old US 101 alignment at the Maze. Interstate 280 (I-280) is a major north–south auxiliary Interstate Highway in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. Alemany Boulevard
Alemany Boulevard is a northeast–southwest street in San Francisco, California, United States. The boulevard was named for Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany. Alemany, who in 1840 completed his studies in sacred theology in Rome at the College of St. Thomas, the future Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, ''Angelicum'', was consecrated Bishop of Monterey in California at Rome on June 30, 1850. He was transferred on July 29, 1853, to the See of San Francisco as its first archbishop. It starts at Bayshore Boulevard near the Alemany Maze (the intersection of Interstate 280 and U.S. 101). Joseph Sadoc Alemany
Joseph Sadoc Alemany y Conill, O.P. (Spanish: José Sadoc Alemany y Conill; July 3, 1814 – April 14, 1888) was a Spanish Catholic clergyman, who served most of his career in California. He served as the first Bishop of Monterey (1850–53) and then as Archbishop of San Francisco (1853–84). Early life Alemany was born in Vic, Catalonia, on July 3, 1814, to Antoni Alemany i Font and Miquela dels Sants i Saborit. Alemany entered the Dominican Order in 1821 and pursued his theological studies at the convents of Trumpt and Garona. His solemn profession of religious vows made in September 1831, the same year that his protégé, Patrick Manogue was born in Ireland. He was then sent to Rome to study at the College of St. Thomas in Rome, the future Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, commonly referred to as the ''Angelicum'', where in 1840 he was made Lector in Theology.
