Alejandro Cartagena
Alejandro Cartagena (born 1977) is a Dominican Republic-born Mexican photographer. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Cartagena has been shortlisted for the 2021 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize. Work Cartagena is interested in the "effects of suburban sprawl on population growth and the environment in his home city" of Monterrey, Mexico. For ''Carpoolers'' (2014) he photographed construction workers from above, travelling to work along Mexican Federal Highway 85 in the back of their contractors' trucks, in 2011. Museum Of Contemporary Photography
The Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP) was founded in 1976 by Columbia College Chicago as the successor to the Chicago Center for Contemporary Photography. The museum houses a permanent collection as well as the Midwest Photographers Project (MPP), which contains portfolios of photographers and artists' work who reside in the Midwestern United States. The Museum of Contemporary Photography began collecting in the early 1980s and has since grown its collection to include more than 15,000 objects by over 1,500 artists. Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize
The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize is a prize awarded annually by the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation and The Photographers' Gallery to a photographer who has made the most significant contribution to the photographic medium in Europe during the past year. The prize was set up in 1996 by The Photographers' Gallery, London. From 1997 to 2004 it was called the Citigroup Photography Prize or Citibank Private Bank Photography Prize. Mexican Federal Highway 85
Federal Highway 85 (''Carretera Federal 85'') connects Mexico City with the Mexico–United States border at Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. Highway 85 runs through Monterrey, Nuevo León; Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas; Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosí; and Pachuca, Hidalgo. It ends at the intersection of Highway 95 in the San Pedro area of Mexico City. Highway 85 is the original route of the Pan-American Highway from the border to the capital as well as the Inter-American Highway. Through most of Tamaulipas and Nuevo León, it is a freeway and is essentially a southern continuation of U.S. Interstate 35. Urban Sprawl
Urban sprawl (also known as suburban sprawl or urban encroachment) is defined as "the spreading of urban developments (such as houses and shopping centers) on undeveloped land near a city." Urban sprawl has been described as the unrestricted growth in many urban areas of housing, commercial development, and roads over large expanses of land, with little concern for urban planning. In addition to describing a special form of urbanization, the term also relates to the social and environmental consequences associated with this development. Medieval suburbs suffered from loss of protection of city walls, before the advent of industrial warfare. Modern disadvantages and costs include increased travel time, transport costs, pollution, and destruction of the countryside. The cost of building urban infrastructure for new developments is hardly ever recouped through property taxes, amounting to a subsidy for the developers and new residents at the expense of existing property taxpayers. Poulomi Basu
Poulomi Basu (born October 1983) is an Indian artist, documentary photographer and activist, much of whose work addresses the normalisation of violence against marginalised women. Basu received the Royal Photographic Society's Hood Medal for the series ''Blood Speaks'', about the Nepalese practice of Chhaupadi. In 2017, Basu was selected for the Sundance New Frontiers Lab Fellowship. Her photobook ''Centralia'', about the conflict between the Indian state and the Maoist People's Liberation Guerrilla Army, was shortlisted for the 2021 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize. Cao Fei ( zh, 曹斐; born 1978) is a Chinese multimedia artist born in Guangzhou, China, Guangzhou. Her work, which includes video, performance, and digital media, examines the daily life of Chinese citizens born after the Cultural Revolution. Her work explores China's widespread internet culture as well as the borders between dreams and reality. Cao has captured the rapid social and cultural transformation of contemporary China, highlighting the impact of foreign influences from the USA and Japan. Zineb Sedira (born April 1st, 1963) is a London-based Franco-Algerian feminist photographer and video artist, best known for work exploring the human relationship to geography.
