Alec Snow
Alec Snow (born May 26, 1945) is a businessperson and former politician in Labrador. He represented Menihek in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1989 to 1996. He was born in Millertown Junction, was educated in Grand Falls and moved to Labrador in 1964, working for the Iron Ore Company of Canada for 10 years. He opened his own business in 1973. Snow was a member of the town council for Labrador City, also serving as mayor. He married Anita Lannon; the couple had two children. He was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador assembly in 1989 and was elected in 1993. Labrador West (electoral District)
Labrador West is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. From 1975 to 1996, the district was known as Menihek. Known as the iron ore capital of Canada with two modern mining communities, Labrador City and Wabush, the district has a strong base of labour support. This district was the first in Newfoundland and Labrador to send a New Democratic member to the House of Assembly, electing party leader Peter Fenwick in a 1984 by-election. The NDP regained the seat in 2019 election, beating the Liberals by a mere two votes and holding the riding in the 2021 general election by a twenty one point margin. Newfoundland House Of Assembly
The Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly is the unicameral deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It meets in the Confederation Building in St. John's. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. The governing party sits on the left side of the speaker of the House of Assembly as opposed to the traditional right side of the speaker. This tradition dates back to the 1850s as the heaters in the Colonial Building were located on the left side. Millertown Junction
Millertown Junction is a settlement on the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located at the northeast end of the small lake called Joe Glodes Pond, about where the original railway settlement was though summer cabins have spread in recent years down the eastern fringe of the lake, and a short distance to the west. Millertown Junction was last officially reported in the census in 1981 when it returned a population of 23, the latest in a series of dramatic falls connected with the closing of the railway. Grand Falls-Windsor is a town located in the central region of the island of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, with a population of 13,853 at the 2021 census. The town is the largest in the central region, the sixth largest in the province, and is home to the annual Exploits Valley Salmon Festival. Iron Ore Company Of Canada
Iron Ore Company of Canada (often abbreviated to IOC) (french: Compagnie Minière IOC) is a Canadian-based producer of iron ore. The company was founded in 1949 from a partnership of Canadian and American M.A. Hanna Company. It is now owned by a new consortium, including the Mitsubishi and Rio Tinto corporations. Rio Tinto is the majority shareholder in the venture, with 58.7% of the joint stock as of October 2013. Mitsubishi controlled 26.2% of the investment as of March 2013. Labrador City
Labrador City is a town in western Labrador (part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador), near the Quebec border. With a population of 7,412 as of 2021, it is the second-largest population centre in Labrador, behind Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Neighbouring Labrador City is Wabush, a smaller town with a population of approximately 1,964 as of 2021. Together, the "twin towns" are known as Labrador West. In the 1960s, Labrador City was founded to accommodate employees of the Iron Ore Company of Canada, and iron ore mining continues to be the primary industry in the town.
