Alec McDonald (politician)
Alexander McDonald (12 June 1878 – 9 September 1956) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ararat to farmer Hugh McDonald and Annie Poison. He attended state school and became a grazier at Chrocan near Mount Ararat. In 1913 he married Jemima Bain, with whom he had a son; around 1950 he married Mary Cairns Forsyth. He served on Ararat Shire Council from 1924 to 1955, with two terms as president (1928–29, 1937–38). In 1935 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Country Party member for Stawell and Ararat. Ararat ( Djabwurrung: ''Tallarambooroo'') is a city in south-west Victoria, Australia, about west of Melbourne, on the Western Highway on the eastern slopes of the Ararat Hills and Cemetery Creek valley between Victoria's Western District and the Wimmera. Its urban population according to 2021 census is 8,500 and services the region of 11,880 residents across the Rural City's boundaries. It is also the home of the 2018/19 GMGA Golf Championship Final. Ripon is a single member electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It is a rural electorate based in western Victoria. In 1946 the electoral district of Ripon was first contested but then abolished in the 1955 election after being held by Labor for seven of these years. Ballarat, Victoria
Ballarat ( ) is a city in the Central Highlands of Victoria, Australia. At the 2021 Census, Ballarat had a population of 116,201, making it the third largest city in Victoria. Estimated resident population, 30 June 2018. Within months of Victoria separating from the colony of New South Wales in 1851, gold was discovered near Ballarat, sparking the Victorian gold rush. Ballarat subsequently became a thriving boomtown that for a time rivalled Melbourne, the capital of Victoria, in terms of wealth and cultural influence. In 1854, following a period of civil disobedience in Ballarat over gold licenses, local miners launched an armed uprising against government forces. Richard Toutcher
Richard Frederick Toutcher (27 May 1861 – 6 September 1941) was an Australian politician. He was born in Maryborough to Charles and Ellen Toutcher and attended the local grammar school. He became a civil servant in the Postal Department, and was active in the campaign for Federation. Considered a Deakinite Liberal, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Ararat in 1897, transferring to Stawell and Ararat in 1904. He was Minister of Public Instruction and Forests from April to July 1924. He continued in the Assembly until 1935, serving as a member of the Nationalist and United Australia parties.
