Aldinga is a suburb of Adelaide in South Australia located about south of the Adelaide city centre in the City of Onkaparinga. it is a small suburb (population around 573 in 2016), about a kilometre east of the edge of the larger suburb of Aldinga Beach, and about from the beachfront. History Aboriginal use Before British colonisation of South Australia, the Kaurna people occupied the land from the Adelaide plains and southwards down western side of the Fleurieu Peninsula. There was a camp at Aldinga known as Camp Coortandillah, and Kaurna people were present living in the Aldinga Scrub until the 1870s, when Bishop Augustus Short sent the remaining people to the mission at Poonindie, thus ending their occupation of the area. After they were removed, some Aboriginal people from the Goolwa area (Ngarrindjeri people) occupied the area. The Kaurna language name of Aldinga was Ngaltingga. Aldinga Bay is a bay located on the east coast of Gulf St Vincent in South Australia about south-southwest of Adelaide city centre. Extent & description Aldinga Bay lies between Snapper Point in the suburb of Aldinga Beach at its northern extremity and the remains of Myponga Jetty at Myponga Beach at its southern extremity. Ports and other settlements The bay has no infrastructure for maritime use apart from access to the beach from the road network to launch and retrieve small boats at specific locations permitted by the local government authority, the City of Onkaparinga. The following settlements are located along its coastline from north to south: Aldinga Beach and Sellicks Beach in the City of Onkaparinga and Myponga Beach in the District Council of Yankalilla. Aldinga Football Club
The Aldinga Football Club is an Australian rules football club that was a foundation member of the Southern Football Association in 1886. From 1927 to 1932, Aldinga won a record 6 premierships in a row in the Southern Football Association. In 1901 Aldinga was involved in a brief merger with the Sellick's Hill F.C. to form the Hills United Football Club. The Aldinga Football Club continues to field teams in both Senior and Junior grades in the Southern Football League. 2014 media coverage In 2014, Aldinga received significant media coverage after sacking their coach, Shane Lynch, after only two games which resulted in combined losses of 457 points, including a 300-point loss to Port Noarlunga. Aldinga Airfield
Aldinga Airfield (ICAO:YADG) is a small, uncontrolled regional airfield located in Aldinga, South Australia. The airfield serves as a regional port and is privately owned and maintained. History Aldinga Airfield was built in 1976 by a group of pilots who wanted an authentic airfield that could access the McLaren Vale wine region. The airfield received significant support from other pilots and aviators and was eventually built with a paved runway, and constructed parking areas. Today the airfield is used mostly by private pilots, Adelaide Biplanes and people who are passing through from Kangaroo Island, Eyre Peninsula and other places. The airfield is outside the main Adelaide controlled airspace, making it easy for VFR pilots to operate in and out of the airfield. The airfield has over 50 parking hangars, most of which are privately owned.
