Albion CX22S
The Albion CX22S was a heavy artillery tractor used by the British Army during World War II. Overview The Albion CX22S was designed and built by Albion Motors in late 1943 to supplement the Scammell Pioneer heavy artillery tractor, which was not available in sufficient numbers. In service the CX22S was used by the British Army to tow the 155mm Long Tom and the BL 7.2-inch howitzer. The CX22S was based on Albion's CX23N 10-ton truck. The CX22S was a wheeled 6x4 truck, powered by a six-cylinder inline diesel engine, through a four-speed gearbox and two-speed auxiliary gearbox. The cab of the CX22S had bench seating for two or three whilst the rear body had bench seating for four and folding seats for two more along with stowage for tools, equipment and ammunition. The CX22S was fitted with an Scammell vertical-spindle winch under the rear body to assist with moving a gun. Albion built 532 CX22S artillery tractors between November 1943 and June 1945. 155 Mm Long Tom
The 155 mm gun M1 was a 155 millimeter caliber field gun developed and used by the United States military. Nicknamed "Long Tom" (an appellation with a long and storied history in U.S. field and naval artillery), it was produced in M1 and M2 variants, later known as the M59. Developed to replace the Canon de 155mm GPF, the gun was deployed as a heavy field weapon during World War II and the Korean War, and also classed as secondary armament for seacoast defense. The M4 High-Speed Tractor for World War II was an artillery tractor used by the US Army from 1943. Design and development The M4 High Speed Tractor used M4 Sherman tracks, roadwheels and drive sprocket. One variant was designed to tow the 90 mm anti-aircraft gun, and another was for the 155 mm gun or 8-inch howitzer. Scammell Pioneer
The Scammell Pioneer was a British 6×4 tractor unit used in World War II as an artillery tractor, recovery vehicle and tank transporter. Development Designed as a 6×4 off-road vehicle for use in Britain's colonies where sealed roads were scarce, the Pioneer was first produced in 1927. Though lacking all-wheel drive, its combination of a suspension with great travel, excellent traction, and a low-revving engine gave it impressive pulling power on rough ground at low speeds. Though not designed for military use, the British War Office purchased a single petrol engined example in 1932.
