Albert Stall Jr.
Albert M. Stall, Jr. (born October 10, 1961 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is an American Thoroughbred horse racing trainer best known for winning the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic in which his horse Blame defeated the great filly, Zenyatta. Early life Al Stall Jr. is one of four children of Al Stall Sr. (died 2017), who was the chairman of the Louisiana Racing Commission for 18 years, and Susan Ellender Stall. He first gained experience training racehorses by working with Frank Brothers during high school holidays before attending Louisiana State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Geology. He worked in the oil industry before becoming a trainer, starting as an assistant to Brothers for five years. The Whitney Stakes (run as the Whitney Handicap through 2013 and still sometimes referred to as such) is an American Grade 1 stakes race for Thoroughbred racehorses three years of age and older run at a distance of miles. Rushaway Stakes
The Rushaway Stakes is an American ungraded Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky. It was first run on March 22, 1986, the last year the racetrack was called Latonia. The race is open to three-year-old horses and run over a distance of one and one sixteenth miles (8.5 furlongs). Originally raced on natural dirt, and for the first two years at one mile, since 2021 it has been contested on Tapeta synthetic dirt. The race is named in honor of the racehorse Rushaway who, on Friday afternoon, May 22, 1936, won the Illinois Derby at Aurora Downs in Aurora, Illinois. That night, the three-year-old gelding was shipped three hundred miles south via express train to the Latonia Race Track in Latonia, Kentucky where on Saturday he won the Latonia Derby. Texas Mile Stakes
The Steve Sexton Mile Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older over the distance of one mile (8 furlongs on the dirt scheduled annually in late May at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. History The inaugural running of the event was on 20 April in 1997 as the Texas Mile Stakes and was won by Isitingood who was trained by the US Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and owned by Michael E. Pegram & Terry Henn in a time of 1:34.44. The winning time continues to this day to be the stakes record. After being classified as a Listed event in 1999 it became the first graded Thoroughbred stakes race in Texas. Fleur De Lis Handicap
The Fleur de Lis Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares age three and older over a distance of miles on the dirt run annually in mid-June at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. History The event was inaugurated on 31 May 1975 as the Fleur de Lis Handicap and was won by the favorite Bundler defeating four other runners on a sloppy track in the time of 1:39 over the mile distance. The event was held over the same distance for one more year before being extended to miles. The event is named after the English translation for the French "fleur-de-lis", a flower of the lily. The lily is the symbol of the Louisville flag, the location where the event is held. The Wise Dan Stakes is a Grade II American thoroughbred horse race for horses four-year-old and older run at a distance of one and one sixteenth of a mile on the turf held annually in June at Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. History The event was inaugurated on 4 July 1983 as the Firecracker Handicap over a distance of 7 furlongs on a sloppy dirt track and was won by Shot n' Missed who defeated the odds on favorite Dave's Friend in a five horse field. In the third running in 1985 the winner Rapid Gray set a new track record for the distance in a time of 1:21. The event was discontinued for seven years and when it was revived in 1993 it was held on the turf course over a distance of one mile. The West Virginia Derby is an American Grade III stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred race horses run over a distance of miles on the dirt at Mountaineer Race Track in Chester, West Virginia in August. The purse for the event is US$500,000. History The inaugural running of the event was 21 April 1923, the ninth race day at the newly opened Huntingdon's Tri-State Park. Estimates put the crowd size at 10,000. Huntington's hotel rooms were so solidly booked that 50 people applied at the city jail for lodging. The Golden Rod Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in late November at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Pocahontas Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-old fillies over a distance of miles on the dirt scheduled annually in September at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
