Albert Morehouse
Albert Pickett Morehouse (July 11, 1835 – September 23, 1891) was the 26th Governor of Missouri from 1887 to 1889. Biography Morehouse was born in Delaware County, Ohio and moved to Maryville, Missouri, in 1856. He was admitted to the bar and began practice in Montgomery County, Iowa. At the beginning of the American Civil War, he moved to Graham, Missouri, where he taught school. He joined with the Missouri State Militia in November 1861 consisting of residents of Nodaway County, Missouri. While camped in Lafayette County, Missouri, he met his future wife Mattie McFadden. After the war he formed a law practice with Amos Graham. In 1872 he founded the Nodaway Democrat which would become the Maryville Daily Forum. He was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1876 defeating H.M. Jackson by 197 votes. Amos Graham
Amos Graham (March 14, 1816 – September 14, 1865) was the first Nodaway County, Missouri, clerk. Graham is immortalized in the town of Graham, Missouri, as it is named after him. The town of Maryville, Missouri, is named after his wife, Mary. Graham was born and raised in Washington County, Kentucky. He studied English and became a schoolteacher, moving to Hancock County, Illinois, in 1836 to teach. He returned to Washington County, Kentucky, and in 1839 or 1840 ran an unsuccessful campaign for state representative in the Kentucky General Assembly. He married Mary Jane House on January 9, 1842, and moved to Savannah, Missouri, during the early settlement days of the Platte Purchase territory, where he continued his teaching career. Northwest Missouri State University is a public university in Maryville, Missouri. It has an enrollment of about 8,505 students. Founded in 1905 as a teachers college, its campus is based on the design for Forest Park at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair and is the official Missouri State Arboretum. The school is governed by a state-appointed Board of Regents and headed by Interim President Clarence Green.
