Albert H. Ellis
Albert Harman Ellis (December 17, 1861 – June 18, 1950) was an American Democratic politician and farmer from Oklahoma. Ellis, born in Indiana on December 17, 1861, came to Oklahoma as a homesteader, participating in the Land Run of 1893 that opened the Cherokee Outlet for settlement. Ellis settled in present-day Garfield County southwest of Hayward. Ellis was a member of the fourth Territorial Legislature of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention, and served as speaker pro tempore of the Oklahoma House of Representatives in the first Legislature of Oklahoma. A president pro tempore or speaker pro tempore is a constitutionally recognized officer of a legislative body who presides over the chamber in the absence of the normal presiding officer. The phrase ''pro tempore'' is Latin "for the time being". The Legislature of the State of Oklahoma is the state legislative branch of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The Oklahoma House of Representatives and Oklahoma Senate are the two houses that make up the bicameral state legislature. There are 101 state representatives, each serving a two-year term, and 48 state senators, who serve four-year terms that are staggered so only half of the Oklahoma Senate districts are eligible in each election cycle. Legislators are elected directly by the people from single member districts of equal population. The Oklahoma Legislature meets annually in the Oklahoma State Capitol in Oklahoma City. Ellis County is a county located on the western border of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,151, making it the fifth-least populous county in Oklahoma.
