Albert Gallatin Ellis
Albert Gallatin Ellis (August 24, 1800December 23, 1885) was one of the first American pioneers to settle in Wisconsin. He was the 2nd, 6th, 8th, and 10th Mayor of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Before statehood, he was a member of the legislature of the Wisconsin Territory and was a publisher of the first newspaper west of Lake Michigan. Biography Ellis was born in Verona, New York, on August 24, 1800. An Episcopalian missionary, Ellis moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin Territory, with members of the Oneida people to establish a colony and a school. He later became involved in the Public Land Survey System before becoming a publisher of the '' Green Bay Intelligencer'' in 1834, the first newspaper west of Lake Michigan. In 1852, Ellis moved to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where he worked with the General Land Office and became a surveyor general, as well as once again became a newspaper publisher, eventually becoming an editor. Stevens Point is the county seat of Portage County, Wisconsin, United States. The city was incorporated in 1858. Its 2020 population of 25,666 makes it the largest city in the county. Vernon, New York
Vernon is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 5,408 at the 2010 census. The Town of Vernon is on the western border of the county. The town contains a village, also named Vernon. History The first European settler was Josiah Bushnell, from Berkshire County, Massachusetts, who came in 1794. The town was formed in 1802 from parts of the Towns of Augusta and Westmoreland. Vernon was part of the original Oneida Reservation. In 1859, a remnant group of Oneida people lived in the southwestern part of the town. In 1920, the population of the Town of Vernon was 4,522. Green Bay Intelligencer
The ''Green Bay Intelligencer'' was Wisconsin’s first newspaper. Based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, it was founded by businessman John V. Suydam, with the first issue published on December 11, 1833. Albert Gallatin Ellis joined the paper in 1834. In 1834, Ellis, and subsequently the ''Green-Bay Intelligencer'', supported the campaign of local judge James Duane Doty. As a result, opponents of Doty formed their own newspaper. The newspaper continued with several suspensions until June 1835, at which point Ellis entered a partnership with C. C. Arndt, creating the new partnership, Ellis & Arndt. In 1837 the ''Green-Bay Intelligencer'' was sold to Christopher Sholes, who moved the newspaper to Southport, Wisconsin (now Kenosha Kenosha () is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the seat of Kenosha County.
