Alberni (electoral District)
Alberni was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It originally appeared in the 1890 election and then, after being merged into Cowichan-Alberni for the 1894 election, was renamed Alberni riding in the election of 1898. The riding lasted by that name until 1933 and 1937, when the name Alberni-Nanaimo was used. In 1941 the Alberni riding name was restored. After a redistribution, the area became part of the riding of Alberni-Qualicum. 1937 British Columbia General Election
The 1937 British Columbia general election was the nineteenth general election in the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on April 14, 1937, and held on June 1, 1937. The new legislature met for the first time on October 26, 1937. The governing Liberal Party, despite winning only 37% of the popular vote, benefited from the split in the vote between the Conservative Party and the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, and won a solid majority of the seats in the legislature. The rift in the Conservative Party that led to its decision not to nominate candidates in the 1933 election had been resolved, and the party was able to form the official opposition. The Conservatives and CCF each won about 29% of the vote, and only 8 seats and 7 seats, respectively. The remaining two seats were won by Labour and Independent candidates. George Sharratt Pearson
George Sharratt Pearson (April 27, 1880 – August 24, 1966) was a Canadian politician in the province of British Columbia. He represented the ridings of Nanaimo from 1928 to 1933, Alberni-Nanaimo from 1933 to 1941 and Nanaimo and the Islands from 1941 to 1952 in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as a Liberal. He was born in Bromley, Staffordshire in 1880, the son of Joseph Dudley Pearson and Emma Sharratt. Pearson came to Canada in 1889; he was educated in Nanaimo, British Columbia Nanaimo ( ) is a city on the east coast of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. Alexander Maitland Stephen
Alexander Maitland Stephen, (May 8, 1882 – July 1, 1942), often known as A. M. Stephen, was a Canadian author of poetry and fiction. Biography Stephen was born near Paisley, Ontario. His parents were Alexander Stephen and Margaret Whiteford. He attended high school in Walkerton, Ontario before he moved out west. He worked at various jobs including ranching, prospecting and as a school teacher. He then enrolled at the University of Chicago where he obtain a degree in architecture. In 1914, he enlisted in the army and was sent to fight in France with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was wounded and returned to Canada. After the war he settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. He married Wealtha Irene Spores and together they raised a son. In Vancouver he became active in social and labour movements. Nanaimo is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. Demographics Geography The riding contains most of the city of Nanaimo plus the uninhabited Five Finger Island, Snake Island and Hudson Rocks which are in the Nanaimo C electoral area. History The district was known as Nanaimo and the Islands from 1941 to 1963. It was formed of parts of the former ridings of Alberni-Nanaimo and The Islands. In the 1966 election the Nanaimo riding name was restored and the southern part of the riding became Saanich and the Islands. That area is now part of Saanich North and the Islands. George Arthur Benjamin Hall
George Arthur Benjamin Hall (October 29, 1868 – November 5, 1948) was a physician and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Nelson City in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1907 to 1909 as a Liberal. He was born in Ottawa, Ontario, the son of Lewis Hall and Elizabeth Beardsmore, and came to British Columbia with his parents at the age of seven. He was educated in British Columbia and at the Philadelphia Dental College. Hall practised as a dentist in Nanaimo for two years and then continued his medical studies at Cooper Medical College in San Francisco, at the New York Polyclinic and at Johns Hopkins University. He then set up practice in Nelson. In 1893, he married Christina Pool. Hall was resident physician for the Canadian Pacific Railway, provincial health officer and jail physician. James Lyle Telford
James Lyle Telford (21 June 1889 – 27 September 1960) was the 24th mayor of Vancouver, British Columbia from 1939 to 1940 and a founder of the British Columbia branch of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). He was born in Valens, Ontario. Telford was a member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as CCF representative. He campaigned for Vancouver mayor in late 1938, defeating incumbent mayor George Clark Miller by approximately 2000 votes in a city race that involved a total of seven mayoral candidates, which split the right-wing vote. Telford did not maintain CCF party membership as mayor, maintaining that political parties should not be a part of municipal politics. He was also a medical doctor by profession.
