Albany County Militia
The Albany County militia was the colonial militia of Albany County, New York. Drawn from the general male population, by law all male inhabitants from 15 to 55 had to be enrolled in militia companies, the later known by the name of their commanders. By the 1700s, the militia of the Province of New York was organized by county and officers were appointed by the royal government. Colonial Militia
Colonial troops or colonial army refers to various military units recruited from, or used as garrison troops in, colonial territories. Colonial background Such colonies may lie overseas or in areas dominated by neighbouring land powers such as Imperial China or Tsarist Russia. Colonial troops have been used by Imperial powers whether ancient (such as Carthage and Rome), or modern (such as Great Britain, France, Netherlands, Denmark, the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, and Portugal). Sometimes they have been recruited under local leaders, as auxiliaries; and at other times organised directly by the colonial power. Van Schoonhoven's Regiment Of Militia
The Van Schoonoven's Regiment of Militia, also known as the 12th Albany County Militia Regiment, was called up in July 1777 at Halfmoon, New York, to reinforce Gen. Horatio Gates's Continental Army during the Saratoga Campaign. The regiment served in Brigadier General Abraham Ten Broeck's brigade. With the defeat of General John Burgoyne's British Army on October 17, 1777, the regiment stood down. Tryon County Militia
The creation of the Tryon County, New York militia was authorized on March 8, 1772, when the Province of New York passed a bill for the establishment of organized militia in each county in the colony. By 1776 (at the start of the American War of Independence), the Tryon County militia had in effect become an army of rebellion under the control of the Tryon County Committee of Safety. The Tryon County militia would go on to fight at the important battles of Oriskany and Johnstown (among others) during the war. Abraham Ten Broeck
Abraham Ten Broeck (May 13, 1734 – January 19, 1810) was a New York politician, businessman, and militia Brigadier General of Dutch descent. He was twice Mayor of Albany, New York and built one of the largest mansions in the area, the Ten Broeck Mansion, that still stands more than 200 years later. Early life Abraham Ten Broeck was the son of Dirck Ten Broeck (1686–1751) and Margarita (née Cuyler) (1682–1783). He was the brother of Catharine Ten Broeck Livingston, who was married to John Livingston (a son of Robert Livingston the Younger), Anna Ten Broeck, and Christina Ten Broeck, who was married to Philip Livingston, and New York State Senator Dirck W. Peter Gansevoort
Peter Gansevoort (July 17, 1749 – July 2, 1812) was a Colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He is best known for leading the resistance to Barry St. Leger's Siege of Fort Stanwix in 1777. Gansevoort was also the maternal grandfather of ''Moby-Dick'' author Herman Melville. Jacobus Van Schoonoven
Jacobus Van Schoonhoven (February 2, 1744 - February 21, 1814) was a colonel of the 12th Albany County Militia Regiment also known as Van Schoonhoven's Regiment of Militia which fought in the American Revolutionary War. Jacobus was born in Waterford, New York, to Guert Van Schoonhoven and Anna Lansing. At age 20 in 1764 he was married to Elizabeth Clute. On October 20, 1775, at age 31 in Halfmoon, New York Jacobus was commissioned to form and become colonel of the 12th Albany County Militia Regiment as to reinforce Horatio Gates' Continental Army during the Saratoga campaign since he was a man of great prominence in Albany and Saratoga, finishing his service in 1777 with a resounding victory.
