Alaska Gubernatorial Election, 1958
The 1958 Alaska gubernatorial election took place on November 25, 1958, for the post of Governor of Alaska. It was Alaska's first gubernatorial election as a U.S. state, although this did not take effect until January 3, 1959. Democratic Shadow Senator William A. Egan and his running mate Hugh Wade defeated Republican State Senator John Butrovich and his running mate, former territorial tax commissioner K.F. Dewey. United States gubernatorial elections were held in 1958, in 34 states, concurrent with the House and Senate elections, on November 4, 1958 (September 8 in Maine, November 25 in Alaska). Hugh Wade
Hugh Joseph Wade (June 29, 1901 – March 25, 1995) was an American Democratic politician who served as the first secretary of state of Alaska, serving from January 3, 1959, until December 5, 1966. Wade ran for Governor in 1958, dropping out after Bill Egan announced his run. He then ran for Secretary of State (equivalent today to Lieutenant Governor), and won the Democratic nomination in a close contest against Dick Greuel. The ticket of Egan/Wade won the 1958 general election, defeating the Republican ticket of John Butrovich and K.F.
