Alasdair Pinkerton
Alasdair Douglas Pinkerton is a British Liberal Democrat politician and academic who has been Member of Parliament for Surrey Heath since 2024. Early life and career Pinkerton was born and grew up in Scotland, attending university in St Andrews. He has worked as an associate professor of geopolitics at Royal Holloway University. In 2013, he served as an accredited observer of the Falkland Islands referendum. Parliamentary career (2019–) Pinkerton first sought election to Parliament in 2019 in Surrey Heath delivering an unexpected 11.1% swing against incumbent Michael Gove. Surrey Heath
Surrey Heath is a local government district with borough status in Surrey, England. Its council is based in Camberley. Much of the area is within the Metropolitan Green Belt. History The district was formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, as a merger of Frimley and Camberley Urban District, and Bagshot Rural District. The Borough acquired its name because it includes extensive areas of heath and woodland including Chobham Common and Lightwater Country Park. Bagshot Rural District Bagshot Rural District formed the largest part of Surrey Heath. The villages and hamlets in Bagshot rural district comprised Lightwater, Bagshot, Windlesham, Chobham including West End and Bisley. 2013 Falkland Islands Sovereignty Referendum
A referendum on political status was held in the Falkland Islands on 10–11 March 2013. The Falkland Islanders were asked whether or not they supported the continuation of their status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom in view of Argentina's call for negotiations on the islands' sovereignty. On a turnout of 92%, 99.8% voted to remain a British territory, with only three votes against. Had the islanders rejected the continuation of their current status, a second referendum on possible alternatives would have been held. Brad Smith, the leader of the international observer group, announced that the referendum was free and fair and executed in accordance with international standards and international laws. Surrey () is a ceremonial county, ceremonial and non-metropolitan county, non-metropolitan counties of England, county in South East England, bordering Greater London to the south west.
