Alan Smith (footballer, Born 1921)
Alan Smith (15 October 1921 – 27 May 2019) was an English professional footballer who played as an outside left in the Football League for Arsenal, Brentford, and Leyton Orient making a total of 22 appearances, scoring 5 goals. Playing career Smith joined First Division club Arsenal in May 1946 after being demobbed from the Army. He made his league debut, aged 24, on 7 September 1946 against Sunderland. He made only a further two appearances for "The Gunners" before, in December 1946, being transferred to another First Division club Brentford. Smith scored his first league goal on 26 December 1946 for Brentford in a 2–1 victory against Sheffield United and scored a total of three goals in ten league appearances for "The Bees" over the 1946–47 season – at the end of which the club were relegated. He did not play any further league matches for Brentford until the tail-end of the 1948–49 season, when he appeared in three Second Division matches, scoring one goal. In J ... Allan Smith (high Jumper)
Allan Smith is a multiple British champion and Team GB internationalist high jumper. He first came to the attention of the athletics world in 2011 when capturing all the Great Britain & Ireland Under 20 Men national indoor championship titles in a unique domestic athletics "grand-slam" that had never been done before. During that indoor season he also won the Welsh senior indoor title and set a Championship Best Performance in the Scottish Athletics Indoor League, placing him at the top of the UK junior men rankings for 2011. In 2012, he won the Scottish National Open and was runner-up in the Amateur Athletic Association of England (AAA) Under 23 Championship. During the 2013 indoor season Smith won the Scottish Universities title, Scottish Seniors title and was runner up in the UK Senior Indoor Championships. Sam Smith (toy-maker)
Sam Smith (Alan Verner Smith 1908–1983) was an artist, craftsman, and sculptor, especially known for his toy-making for adults and children, carving small wooden curios such as boats and seaside dioramas. He signed some of his 1930s work "Alan V". Later, he signed items "Sam Smith. Genuine. England" as it became successful and sold in London (for instance in Primavera shop) and New York. He painted many pictures. During the Second World War, he worked as a draughtsman, for instance producing technical drawings for the development of the Bailey Bridge in Christchurch, Dorset.. After the war, he, his wife Gladys, and their son Jasper lived in the steep-hillside house named "The Golf House" overlooking Kingswear, Devon, and across the River Dart to Dartmouth. For making toys, Sam had many modern wood-cutting tools in his studio in their house. Cris Alexander (born Allen Smith, January 14, 1920 – March 7, 2012) was an American actor, singer, dancer, designer, and photographer. Early life and education Cris Alexander was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1920. He began using the name Christopher, which he thought more distinguished, in his teens. On the advice of a spiritualist, he removed the "h" and went by Cris from then on. Alexander attended the University of Oklahoma while working as a radio announcer in Oklahoma City. He moved to New York City in 1938 to study at the Feagin School of Dramatic Art. Acting Alexander was cast as Chip, a naive sailor, in the original Broadway cast of Leonard Bernstein's '' On the Town'' in 1944. He performed the song "Come Up to My Place" in a duet with Nancy Walker in the role of Hildy. He returned to Broadway in 1946 in ''Present Laughter'' opposite Clifton Webb. Sir Alan Smith, CBE, DFC*, DL (14 March 19171 March 2013), was a British World War II Royal Air Force Supermarine Spitfire fighter ace and businessman. Early life Smith was born at South Shields, County Durham. He left Bede College School, Sunderland at 14 after the death of his merchant navy sea captain father to work in his mother's ironmongery store and then set up his own business. Military service He trained as a pilot after joining the RAF Volunteer Reserve and joined No. 610 Squadron RAF. He then joined No. 616 Squadron RAF as a sergeant pilot in January 1941 based at RAF Tangmere. He was under the command of Wing Commander Douglas Bader who selected him as his wingman in which role he was described as "leech-like", and "a perfect number two". Alan Smith (born 1966) is a presenter and newsreader on BBC Radio 4, who also appears on sister station BBC Radio 4 Extra, Radio 4 Extra. Born in the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion, Edinburgh, Scotland, he moved with his family to Cumbria when he was two. He joined Radio 4 in 2002 after presenting on regional radio & TV. Alan Edward Smith (born 9 October 1945) is a British geneticist who was Chief Scientific Officer of Genzyme from 1996 to 2011. He was educated at Price's School, Fareham, Christ's College, Cambridge (BA, 1967) and completed his PhD at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in 1984. He was head of the biochemistry division at the National Institute for Medical Research in Mill Hill, London from 1980 to 1984. He revealed the genome structure of SV40, a DNA virus found in both humans and monkeys which can cause tumours. He is on the board of Arecor Therapeutics plc, and was formerly on the board of Candel Therapeutics.
