Alan Simpson (theatre Director)
Alan Simpson (1921–1980) was an Irish theatre director. Simpson was born in Dublin, Ireland, the son of Walter Simpson, a Church of Ireland clergyman. He was called up to the army in 1941. In 1945 he transferred onto the army reserve and joined the Gate Theatre, Dublin as stage manager. Career In 1953 Simpson co-founded the Pike Theatre along with his wife Carolyn Swift. On November 19, 1954, Simpson staged the first ever production of The Quare Fellow by Brendan Behan, and, in 1955, he mounted the first Irish production of Samuel Beckett's '' Waiting for Godot'', which went on to become one of the longest-running productions in Ireland up until that time. In 1957 he staged Tennessee Williams' ''The Rose Tattoo'' during the first International Dublin Theatre Festival. Alan Francis Simpson (27 November 1929 – 8 February 2017) was an English scriptwriter, best known for the Galton and Simpson comedy writing partnership with Ray Galton. Together they devised and wrote the BBC sitcom ''Hancock's Half Hour'' (1954–1961), the first two series of ''Comedy Playhouse'' (1961–1963), and ''Steptoe and Son'' (1962–1974). Early life Simpson was born in Brixton, south London, and was educated at Mitcham County Grammar School for Boys. He was a football fan and supported Brentford. After leaving school he worked as a shipping clerk and was a member of a church concert party. Alan Kooi Simpson (born September 2, 1931) is an American politician and member of the Republican Party, who represented Wyoming in the United States Senate (1979–97). He also served as co-chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform with Democratic Party co-chair Erskine Bowles of North Carolina. Born in Denver, Colorado, Simpson graduated from the University of Wyoming's law school (1958). Simpson served in the Wyoming House of Representatives (1965–77) and won election to the United States Senate (1978). His father, Milward Simpson, had served in the same seat (1962–67). Alan John Simpson (born 20 September 1948) is a British former Labour Party politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nottingham South from 1992 to 2010. Early life Simpson attended Bootle Grammar School for Boys and studied economics at Trent Polytechnic, where he was President of the Student Union from 1969–70. After graduating in 1972, he became a community worker, holding the post of Assistant General Secretary at the Nottingham Council of Voluntary Service from 1970–74, and working on an anti-vandalism project from 1974–78. He later became a research officer for the city's Racial Equality Council from 1979–92. He joined the Labour Party in 1973 and was elected a county councillor in 1985.
