Alan John Ross (6 May 1922 – 14 February 2001) was a British poet, writer, editor and publisher. Early years Ross was born in Calcutta, India, son of John Brackenridge Ross, CBE, a former Lieutenant in the Indian Army Reserve ( Supply and Transport Corps), a businessman involved in the coal-mining industry as a partner in Gilchrist, Peace & Ross, of Calcutta, "merchants and engineers, shipping, clearing and forwarding agents", managing agents for, amongst others, the Indian Coal and Mineral Syndicate Ltd and the Konda Colliery, and Clare Margaret, daughter of Captain Patrick Fitzpatrick of the Indian Army. When, aged seven, he was sent to be educated in Falmouth, England, he spoke better Hindustani than English. Allan Ross
James Allan Ross (26 May 1942 – 2 November 1999) was a Scottish professional football goalkeeper who played most of his career for Carlisle United. Although always listed with the English 'Alan' on teamsheets, Ross's birth certificate lists him as the Scottish 'Allan'. Ross holds the all-time appearance record for Carlisle United, 466 games. Ross was once called on during an injury crisis to play outfield as a substitute. Ross was part of the Carlisle team who were promoted to the First Division in 1974. Ross could have been transferred to Celtic in the late 1960s, but Carlisle United blocked the move. Around the same time he trained with the Scotland squad, but was never given a full international cap. After his retirement Ross remained in Carlisle, working in housing for the city council. The Children of Rain was a 1960s folk trio from New York City, consisting of brother and sister Pam and Denis Meacham and singer/songwriter Alan Ross. The group released the second-ever 45 rpm single of the famed 1960s’ anthem " Get Together" — later a classic by The Youngbloods — on Dot Records (45-16868) in April 1966. Pam and Alan married in late 1967, forming the folk-rock group Ross Legacy and releasing ''Makes You Wanna Sigh'', written by Pam’s brother and former Children of Rainer Denis, on the Philips label (40620) in 1969.
