Alan Reiher
Alan Silvius Reiher (13 June 19273 August 2003) was a senior Australian public servant, best known for his time as Director-General of Works in the Australian Government bureaucracy and for heading government transport agencies in New South Wales and Victoria. Life and career Alan Reiher was born in Melbourne on 13 June 1927 to Silvius Thomas Reiher and Agnes Marion Reiher. Having graduated from the University of Melbourne with a civil engineering degree, Reiher commenced his Australian Public Service career in 1957 as an Engineer in the Department of Works. He spent a year at the Harvard Business School soon before being appointed Director-General of the department in 1967. In 1975 while Secretary of the Department of Housing and Construction, Reiher was appointed as a member of the Darwin Reconstruction Authority in the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy. The Public Transport Commission (PTC) was an agency of the Government of New South Wales responsible for the provision of rail, bus and ferry services in New South Wales, Australia from October 1972 until June 1980. Upon dissolution, responsibility for rail services transferred to the State Rail Authority and responsibility for bus and ferry services to the Urban Transit Authority. The PTC, composed of five Commissioners appointed by the Governor of New South Wales, was accountable to the Minister for Transport. George Warwick Smith
George Henry Warwick Smith (3 October 1916 – 27 December 1999) was a senior Australian public servant. Early life Warwick Smith was born in Charters Towers, Queensland on 3 November 1916. He attended high school at Brisbane Grammar School, but left early at the age of 15. He went on to matriculate and graduate with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland. Career Warwick Smith moved from a job at the Queensland Education Department to the Commonwealth Public Service in the Department of Commerce. He soon left the public service to join the Army, serving during the Second World War between 1941 and 1945. Robert Broughton Lansdown (9 May 1921 – 6 May 2006) was a senior Australian public servant and policymaker. Life and career Bob Lansdown was born on 9 May 1921 in East Maitland. At the age of 14, he first joined the Australian Public Service, as a post office bicycle messenger in Strathfield. During World War II, Lansdown joined the Second Australian Imperial Force, serving in the Middle East and New Guinea. James Ferguson Nimmo (191215 December 1984) was a senior Australian public servant and policy maker, best known for his time as Secretary of the Department of Housing. Life and career James Nimmo was born in 1912. He attended Geelong College and then the University of Melbourne. Whilst in his final year of university (studying economics), he worked for Lyndhurst Giblin as a research secretary. Moving to Canberra in 1935 to take up a temporary appointment at the Bureau of Census and Statistics. He was awarded a permanent position in 1938, after a short period of study at the London School of Economics. His career over the next couple of decades included a period of time at the Rationing Commission and then later in the Treasury. The Victorian Railways (VR), trading from 1974 as VicRail, was the state-owned operator of most rail transport in the Australian state of Victoria from 1859 to 1983. Overview ''Truck & Bus Transportation'' was established in July 1936 by Frank Shennen as ''Transportation''. It was renamed ''Truck & Bus Transportation'' in March 1940. It originally covered all forms of transport, but after a short while rail and tram news was withdrawn, with it focussing on the bus and truck industries. It was sold in 1986 to the Murray family. Peter Cox (politician)
Peter Francis Cox AO (4 December 1925 – 6 October 2008) was a politician in New South Wales, Australia. Early life Cox was born in Bathurst, New South Wales, and educated at Marist Brothers College in the Sydney suburb of Lidcombe. His father, Edwin, was a plumber with the NSW railways. Ben Chifley, the future prime minister, helped the Cox family. After leaving school, Peter became a public servant, working for the Department of Motor Transport in 1942. From 1943 until 1945 he was a member of the Second Australian Imperial Force and served in the Borneo campaign. Political career In 1949 Cox joined the Labor Party. He won preselection for the New South Wales state seat of Auburn at 39 and entered the Legislative Assembly at the 1965 election, when Labor, then led by Jack Renshaw, lost power.
