Brown Berets
The Brown Berets (Spanish: ''Los Boinas Cafés'') is a pro-Chicano paramilitary organization that emerged during the Chicano Movement in the late 1960s. David Sanchez and Carlos Montes co-founded the group modeled after the Black Panther Party. The Brown Berets was part of the Third World Liberation Front. It worked for educational reform, farmworkers' rights, and against police brutality and the Vietnam War. It also sought to separate the American Southwest from the control of the United States government. The Brown Berets' high visibility and paramilitary stance made it a key target for infiltration and harassment by local police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and other law enforcement agencies. ''The Austin Chronicle'' is an alternative weekly newspaper published every Thursday in Austin, Texas, United States. Mary Tyler "Molly" Ivins (August 30, 1944 – January 31, 2007) was an American newspaper columnist, author, political commentator, and humorist. Born in California and raised in Texas, Ivins attended Smith College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She began her journalism career at the ''Minneapolis Tribune'' where she became the first female police reporter at the paper. Ivins joined ''The Texas Observer'' in the early 1970s and later moved to ''The New York Times''. Barbara Charline Jordan (February 21, 1936 – January 17, 1996) was an American lawyer, educator, and politician. A Democrat, she was the first African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction and the first Southern African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives. Jordan is known for her eloquent opening statement at the House Judiciary Committee hearings during the impeachment process against Richard Nixon. In 1976, she became the first African-American, and the first woman, to ever deliver a keynote address at a Democratic National Convention. Mary Frances Tarlton "Sissy" Farenthold (October 2, 1926 – September 26, 2021) was an American politician, attorney, activist, and educator. She was best known for her two campaigns for governor of Texas in 1972 and 1974, and for being placed in nomination for vice president of the United States, finishing second at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. She was elected as the first chair of the National Women's Political Caucus in 1973. John Henry Faulk (August 21, 1913 – April 9, 1990) was an American storyteller and radio show host. Veterans For Peace
Veterans for Peace is an organization founded in 1985. Initially made up of US military veterans of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan (2001–present), War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War, and as well as peacetime veterans and non-veterans, it has since spread overseas and has an active offshoot in the United Kingdom (which has effectively replaced the former 'Ex-Services CND' organization). Bat Shalom is one of the organizations of the Coalition of Women for a Just Peace. They are a feminist Israeli-Palestinian non-governmental organization, a merging of two previous organizations: Israel’s Bat Shalom, and the Jerusalem Center for Women. They work together through another group, The Jerusalem Link. Their main goal is to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with resolutions for Israeli and Palestinian women as their highest priorities. They also created a list of specific goals in mind that they believe must be essential to the overall resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
