Alan Hughes (cricketer)
Alan John Hughes (born 4 April 1951 in Dublin, Republic of Ireland) is an Irish former cricketer. A right-handed batsman and right-arm medium pace bowler, he played five times for the Ireland cricket team between 1979 and 1982 including one List A match. He made his debut for Ireland against Worcestershire in August 1979. He took 4/95 in the Worcestershire first innings, his best bowling performance for Ireland. He played his only List A match the following year against Middlesex at Lord's. He played three more times for Ireland; against Canada in June 1981, against India in May 1982 and against the MCC in June 1982. He scored his only run for Ireland in the match against Canada. In all matches for Ireland, he took nine wickets at an average of 26.56. His cousin Patrick also represented Ireland at cricket. Hughes made nine appearances in The Football League with Chester in 1967–68, during a loan spell from Liverpool (where he failed to make any league appearances). Alan Hughes (born 19 October 1963) is an Irish television personality, pantomime actor and producer. He works for Virgin Media and appears on ''Ireland AM''. He also hosted ''Family Fortunes'' from 2012 to 2014. In the 1990s, he hosted RTÉ quiz show ''Talk About'' for three years. Since the 1990's Hughes has co-produced and starred in pantomimes, usually playing the camp character Sammy Sausages with his "tanx a thousand!" catchphrase. In 2009, Hughes faced a health scare when there were fears he had stomach cancer. In September 2011, Hughes engaged in a civil partnership with his partner of 18 years, Karl Broderick, a songwriter, at the Unitarian Church in St Stephen's Green, Dublin. Allen Hughes (28 December 1921 – 16 November 2009) was an American dance and music critic. Born in Brownsburg, Indiana, Hughes started his career as a critic in 1950 when he joined the staff of ''Musical America''. In 1955, he became a music critic for ''The New York Herald Tribune''. He left there in 1960 to join the staff of ''The New York Times'' where he worked as a music and dance critic until his retirement 26 years later in 1986. He was notably chief dance critic of the newspaper from 1963-1965 and was chief music editor of the Sunday Arts and Leisure section during the early 1980s.
