Alan Huckle
Alan Edden Huckle (born 15 June 1948) is an English senior diplomat in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British Government. He was the commissioner of the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) and the British Antarctic Territory from 23 April 2001 until 12 January 2004, when he left to become the governor of Anguilla in the Caribbean. He was the Governor of Anguilla from 29 July 2004 to July 2006, having been appointed in July 2003. In July 2005 it was announced that Huckle would soon be leaving Anguilla to become Governor of the British Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands and the Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, all of which are located in the South Atlantic Ocean. He was succeeded in Anguilla by Andrew George, on 10 July 2006. During his time as Governor of the Falkland Islands, Huckle oversaw the implementation of the new Constitution in 2009. The Commissioner for the British Antarctic Territory (BAT), is the head of government in the Antarctic Territory of the United Kingdom. As one of the British Overseas Territories, the commissioner is appointed by the monarch of the United Kingdom on the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The British Antarctic Territory was established as a separate British overseas territory in 1962. Originally from 1962 to 1990, a High Commissioner was appointed to oversee the territory who was also Governor of the Falkland Islands. In 1990, administration of the BAT was transferred to a Commissioner based in London. Since 1998, the Commissioner of the BAT has also served as Commissioner of the British Indian Ocean Territory. The Governor of Anguilla is the representative of the monarch in the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla. The Governor is appointed by the monarch on the advice of the British government. The Governor is the highest authority on Anguilla, but daily business is handled by local Anguillan elected officials. The main role of the Governor is to appoint the Premier of Anguilla. The Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is the representative of the British monarch in the United Kingdom's overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The post is held in conjunction with the Governorship of the Falkland Islands. The post was created in 1985 when South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands was split from the Falkland Islands Dependencies to create a new overseas territory. As the territory has no native inhabitants, and the only population is the visiting military garrisons, and scientists from the British Antarctic Survey, there was no appointment of a governor. Instead the post of Commissioner was created, the normal practice for uninhabited territory. Howard John Stredder Pearce, CVO (born 13 April 1949, in Twickenham) is an English diplomat who served as the Governor of the Falkland Islands and Civil Commissioner of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) until July 2006. He assumed both positions on 3 December 2002. Before his appointment, Pearce was High Commissioner to Malta from 1999 to 2002. He joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1972. Pearce attended the City of London School. He married Caroline Thomée, a Dutch architect and photographer in October 2004. He is the first Governor to marry in the Falkland Islands; on the day of the wedding, local schoolchildren were given the day off. Andrew Neil George (born 9 October 1952) is a British diplomat. George served as the Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Anguilla from July 2006 to March 2009. Prior to becoming governor, he had a long career serving the Foreign and Commonwealth Office including postings in Australia, Paraguay, Thailand (where he met his wife) and Indonesia, where his posting ended early after the 2002 Bali bombings.
