Alan H. Kempner
Alan Horace Kempner (July 4, 1897 – December 17, 1985) was an American stockbroker, publishing executive, rare books and manuscripts collector, and philanthropist. Early life and education Kempner was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, before attending Columbia College, where he majored in Latin and graduated in 1917. Career Kempner worked at the American Zinc and Chemical Company for nine years, then purchased a seat on the New York Stock Exchange and became a partner in Byfield & Company. He served as a lieutenant in World War I and joined the United States Air Corps in World War II and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. His interest in books led him to join Farrar, Straus and Giroux as a manager and served on its board of directors after retirement. Giovanni Battista Piranesi
Giovanni Battista (or Giambattista) Piranesi (; also known as simply Piranesi; 4 October 1720 – 9 November 1778) was an Italian Classical archaeologist, architect, and artist, famous for his etchings of Rome and of fictitious and atmospheric "prisons" (''Carceri d'invenzione''). Peggy Guggenheim
Marguerite "Peggy" Guggenheim ( ; August 26, 1898 – December 23, 1979) was an American art collector, bohemian and socialite. Born to the wealthy New York City Guggenheim family, she was the daughter of Benjamin Guggenheim, who went down with the ''Titanic'' in 1912, and the niece of Solomon R. Guggenheim, who established the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Guggenheim collected art in Europe and America primarily between 1938 and 1946. She exhibited this collection as she built it; in 1949, she settled in Venice, where she lived and exhibited her collection for the rest of her life. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a modern art museum on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy, and is one of the most visited attractions in Venice. Benjamin Guggenheim
Benjamin Guggenheim (October 26, 1865 – April 15, 1912) was an American businessman. He died aboard when the ship sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. His body was never recovered. Early life Guggenheim was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the fifth of seven sons of the wealthy mining magnate Meyer Guggenheim (1828–1905), and Barbara Myers (1834–1900), both originally from Lengnau, Aargau, Switzerland. The first member of his family to enter an institute of higher learning, he entered Columbia College in 1882, matriculating with the class of 1887. However, he found most of his course boring and dropped out after his second year.
