Alan Brandt
Allan Morris Brandt (born 1953) is a historian of medicine and the Amalie Kass Professor of History of Medicine and Professor of the History of Science at Harvard University. He is an author of several books, including ''The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product that Defined America'', which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction. Life Brandt received his B.A. in history from Brandeis University in 1974. He then attended Columbia University, where he received his Ph.D. (1983) in American history. He has written on the social history of epidemic disease; the history of public health and health policy; and the history of human experimentation among other topics. In 1998, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Hastings () is a large seaside town and borough in East Sussex on the south coast of England, east to the county town of Lewes and south east of London. The town gives its name to the Battle of Hastings, which took place to the north-west at Senlac Hill in 1066. It later became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. In the 19th century, it was a popular seaside resort, as the railway allowed tourists and visitors to reach the town.
