Alain Damiens
Alain Damiens (born 1950 in Calais) is a French classical clarinetist. Life After studying clarinet at the Conservatoire de Calais, Alain Damiens studied with Ulysse Delécluse at the Conservatoire de Paris and obtained his first prizes (clarinet, chamber music). He received a scholarship to the National Music Camp Michigan in the United States, where he studied clarinet, chamber music and orchestra. He was solo clarinet at the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg and at « Pupitre 14 » (Amiens). In 1976, by artistic choice, he joined the IRCAM (clarinet in B flat, small clarinet in E flat, basset horn, bass clarinet) conducted by Pierre Boulez. He was the performer of pieces by contemporary composers, notably Philippe Fénelon, Franco Donatoni, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Vinko Globokar. Gilbert Amy (born 29 August 1936) is a French composer and conductor. Career Born in Paris, Amy entered the Conservatoire de Paris in 1954, where he was taught and influenced by Olivier Messiaen and Darius Milhaud and studied piano with Yvonne Loriod and fugue with Simone Plé-Caussade. His first composition (''Œil de fumée'') dates from 1955. In 1957 he met Pierre Boulez, under whose direction he composed his Piano Sonata. A year later Boulez commissioned from him a work called ''Mouvements'', which was performed in Darmstadt by the Orchestre du Domaine musical. From 1958 to 1961 he attended the Darmstädter Ferienkurse given by Karlheinz Stockhausen. In 1962 Jean-Louis Barrault named him adjunct music director of the Odéon Theater in Paris. L'Histoire Du Soldat
' (''The Soldier's Tale'') is a theatrical work "to be read, played, and danced" () by three actors and one or several dancers, accompanied by a septet of instruments. Conceived by Igor Stravinsky and Swiss writer C. F. Ramuz, the piece was based on a Russian folk tale drawn from the collection of Alexander Afanasyev called ''The Runaway Soldier and the Devil''. The libretto relates the parable of a soldier who trades his fiddle to the devil in return for unlimited economic gain. The music is scored for a septet of violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet (often played on trumpet), trombone, and percussion, and the story is told by three actors: the soldier, the devil, and a narrator, who also takes on the roles of minor characters. Alban Berg
Alban Maria Johannes Berg ( , ; 9 February 1885 – 24 December 1935) was an Austrian composer of the Second Viennese School. His compositional style combined Romantic lyricism with the twelve-tone technique. Although he left a relatively small ''oeuvre'', he is remembered as one of the most important composers of the 20th century for his expressive style encompassing "entire worlds of emotion and structure". Berg was born and lived in Vienna. He began to compose only at the age of fifteen. He studied counterpoint, music theory and harmony with Arnold Schoenberg between 1904 and 1911, and adopted his principles of ''developing variation'' and the twelve-tone technique. ''Contrasts'' ( Sz. 111, BB 116) is a 1938 composition scored for clarinet-violin-piano trio by Béla Bartók (1881–1945). It is based on Hungarian and Romanian dance melodies and has three movements with a combined duration of 17–20 minutes. Bartók wrote the work in response to a letter from violinist Joseph Szigeti, although it was officially commissioned by clarinetist Benny Goodman. ''In Freundschaft'' (In friendship) is a composition by Karlheinz Stockhausen, number 46 in his catalogue of works. It is a serial composition for a solo instrument, first for clarinet, and later arranged by the composer for many other instruments, often in friendship to specific performers. ''In Freundschaft'' was first conceived in 1977 as a birthday present for clarinetist Suzanne Stephens, and was first performed at her birthday party in Aix-en-Provence on 28 July that year in a version for the flute. Domaines (Boulez)
' is a composition by Pierre Boulez. Written during 1961–1968, it exists in two versions, one for clarinet solo, the other for clarinet solo and six instrumental groups. Like a number of other Boulez works of this period, it uses mobile form. Background ''Domaines'' began its life in 1961 as a work for solo clarinet, and was gradually expanded over a period of eight years into a version for clarinet and ensemble, with the soloist, who moves about the stage, determining the order in which material is performed. Pierre Strauch
Pierre Strauch (born 1958) is a French cellist, composer and conductor. Strauch studied cello with Jean Deplace. Strauch won fourth prize at the Rostropovitch Cello Competition in 1977. In 1978 Strauch joined the ensemble intercontemporain, a French chamber orchestra of 31 soloists founded in 1976 by Pierre Boulez. In 1994, Strauch, along with composers Diogenes Rivas and Antonio Pileggi, founded the Festival Atempo in Caracas, Venezuela. The festival includes concerts of contemporary music, classical music, jazz and folk music. Pierre-Laurent Aimard (born 9 September 1957) is a French pianist. Biography Aimard was born in Lyon, where he entered the conservatory. Later he studied with Yvonne Loriod and with Maria Curcio. In 1973, he was awarded the chamber music prize of the Paris Conservatoire. In the same year, he won the first prize at the international Olivier Messiaen Competition. In 1977, at the invitation of Pierre Boulez, he became a founding member of the Ensemble InterContemporain. He made his American debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of twenty, performing the piano solo part in Olivier Messiaen's ''Turangalîla-Symphonie''. Aimard is particularly committed to contemporary music.
