The 1990 Alabama gubernatorial election was held on November 6, 1990, to select the governor of Alabama. The election saw incumbent Republican Governor Guy Hunt defeat Democrat Paul Hubbert, executive secretary of the Alabama Education Association. This marked the first time in history that a Republican won a second gubernatorial term in Alabama. Democratic primary The Democratic primary saw teachers' union head Paul Hubbert defeat Attorney General of Alabama Don Siegelman for the Democratic nomination. Charles Bishop (Alabama Senator)
Charles Bishop was a Republican member of the Alabama Senate, representing the 5th District from 2006 to November 3, 2010. He did not seek re-election in 2010. The district covers portions of Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston counties. He was succeeded by fellow Republican Greg Reed. Career As a Democrat, Bishop served in the Alabama State Senate from 1983 to 1991. He ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for governor in 1990 and 2002. He was elected as Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries for the term from 1999 to 2003. Bishop switched to the Republican Party before the election in 2006. Bishop made national news in June 2007 when he hit fellow Senator Lowell Barron, a Democrat, while on the Senate floor. Don Siegelman
Donald Eugene Siegelman ( ; born February 24, 1946) is a former American politician, lawyer and convicted felon who was the 51st governor of Alabama from 1999 to 2003. A member of the Democratic Party, as of , Siegelman is the last Democrat, as well as the only Catholic, to serve as Governor of Alabama. Siegelman is the only person in Alabama's history to be elected to serve in all four of the top statewide elected offices: Secretary of State, Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor and Governor. Forrest Hood "Fob" James Jr. (born September 15, 1934) is an American civil engineer, entrepreneur, football player, and politician. He served as the 48th governor of Alabama, first as a Democrat, 1979–1983, and secondly as a Republican, 1995–1999. Education, football, and early career James was born in Lanett, Alabama, the son of Rebecca (née Ellington) and Forrest Hood James. Named after his father, he was nicknamed "Fob" as a boy. Ronnie Gene Flippo (born August 15, 1937) is an American politician and accountant who served seven terms as a United States United States House of Representatives, Congressman from Alabama from 1977 to 1991. Life Flippo was born August 15, 1937 in Florence, Alabama to Claude Nathaniel Flippo and Esther McAfee. He attended the University of North Alabama and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. This was followed up by a master's degree in accounting from the University of Alabama. The Alabama State Senate is the upper house of the Alabama Legislature, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Alabama. Paul Hubbert
Paul R. Hubbert (December 25, 1935 – October 14, 2014) was an American politician and Democratic gubernatorial candidate from the U.S. state of Alabama. From 1969 to 2011, he was executive secretary-treasurer of the Alabama Education Association, a professional association for teachers. The organization serves many of the functions of a trade union, and is often referred to as such by news media and political opponents. State law prohibits public employees from being represented by a union ''per se,'' hence the designation. As president of the AEA, he exerted significant influence upon Alabama politics.
