State Route 131 (SR 131) is a east–west state highway located entirely within Barbour County, Alabama. The route serves as the main road in Bakerhill. Route description The road starts near Blue Springs at SR 10. The road has no major junctions, and the only junctions are minor county routes. The route goes past Bakerhill and then ends at U.S. Route 431 (US 431), the whole route is basically used as a shortcut between Clio and Blue Springs to the major town of Eufaula. Eufaula is the largest city in Barbour County, Alabama, Barbour County, Alabama, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census the city's population was 13,137. History The site along the Chattahoochee River that is now modern-day Eufaula was occupied by three Muscogee, Muscogee Creek tribe (Native American), tribes, including the Eufaula people, Eufaulas. By the 1820s the land was part of the Creek Indian Territory and supposedly off-limits to white settlement. By 1827 enough illegal white settlement had occurred that the Creeks appealed to the federal government for protection of their property rights. In July of that year, federal troops were sent to the Eufaula area to remove the settlers by force of arms, a conflict known as the "Intruders War". Barbour County is a county in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,223. Its county seat is Clayton. Its largest city is Eufaula. Its name is in honor of James Barbour, who served as Governor of Virginia. History Barbour County was established on December 18, 1832, from former Muscogee homelands and a portion of Pike County. Between the years of 1763 and 1783 the area which is now Barbour County was part of the colony of British West Florida. After 1783 the region fell under the jurisdiction of the newly created United States of America. The Muscogee Creek Confederacy was removed to territory west of the Mississippi River. The fertile land was developed by southern migrants as large cotton plantations dependent on slave labor. Bakerhill, Alabama
Bakerhill or Baker Hill is a town in Barbour County, Alabama, United States, near Eufaula. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the town had a population of 279. Although it existed as an unincorporated village since before 1860, the town was officially incorporated in 1997. Geography Bakerhill is located at 31.88 degrees north, 85.15 degrees west (31.88495, -85.15390). The surrounding countryside is mostly rolling hills covered in mostly in pine forest. Small-scale logging, as well as bauxite mining and minor livestock raising activities account for most of the local area's business activities. The town also, as of 2009, includes two gas stations as well as a grill & bar and a small, family owned and operated deer processing business. There is also a small feed mill. State Route 10 (SR 10) is a major west–east state highway in the U.S. state of Alabama, running for through the southern part of the state. It is the lowest even-numbered route in the state that is not an unsigned partner route assigned to a U.S. Highway. It is also the only signed state route that extends from the Mississippi state line to the Georgia state line. The western terminus of the route is in northwestern Choctaw County near the community of Yantley, where it serves as a continuation of Mississippi Highway 19 (MS 19).
