Al Taylor (politician)
Alfred E. Taylor (born August 12, 1957) is an American politician serving as a member of the New York State Assembly for the 71st district. A Democrat, Taylor's district includes portions of Hamilton Heights, Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. Early life and education A lifelong resident of Harlem, Taylor was a troubled youth who was able to turn to judge Bruce Wright, who mentored him and gave him an interest in community service. Taylor then served in the Military Police Corps while earning his GED, then graduated from Lehman College. He later earned a Master of Divinity, with a concentration in church development, from the Alliance Theological Seminary. Career Taylor served for many years as the chief of staff for his predecessor, Herman D. Farrell Jr., while also serving as a Democratic district leader and as the pastor of Infinity Mennonite Church. Alliance Theological Seminary
Alliance Theological Seminary is an evangelical Christian seminary affiliated with Alliance University (New York City) and the Christian and Missionary Alliance, located in Manhattan. History The seminary finds its roots from the Missionary Training Institute, a school established by A.B. Simpson to train missionaries for world service in 1882. The school eventually became Nyack College, and the seminary stemmed out of its graduate program, founded in 1960 as the Jaffray School of Missions. In 1974, the program was redesigned and subsequently renamed to the Alliance School of Theology and Missions. It took its current name in 1979, and was first accredited in 1990 by the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. New York City's 9th City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It is currently represented by Democrat Kristin Richardson Jordan, who took office in 2022. Geography District 9 is based in Harlem in upper Manhattan, also covering smaller parts of East Harlem, Hamilton Heights, and Manhattanville. St. Nicholas Park and Marcus Garvey Park are both located in the district. The district overlaps with Manhattan Community Boards 9, 10, and 11, and is contained entirely within New York's 13th congressional district. Reproductive Health Act
The Reproductive Health Act is a New York statute enacted on January 22, 2019, that expanded abortion rights, decriminalized abortion, and eliminated several restrictions on abortion in the state. The RHA repealed §4164 of the state Public Health Law. The law has received national media attention. Overview Prior to the passage of the Reproductive Health Act (RHA), New York law banned third-trimester abortions, except when necessary to save the life of a pregnant woman. In addition, New York law recognized licensed physicians as the only medical providers able to perform abortions. Abortion was also included as part of the penal law under homicide, and could be charged as a criminal offense prior to the RHA.
