Al Neiburg
Allen J. Neiburg (November 22, 1902—July 12, 1978) was an American lyricist. He was born on 22 November 1902 in St. Albans, Vermont and received his education at Boston University. He is known for writing lyrics for such songs as "I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)" (with Doc Dougherty and Ellis Reynolds), "It's the Talk of the Town" and "Under a Blanket of Blue" (with Jerry Livingston and Marty Symes). "(I'm) Confessin' (that I Love You)" (also known as "Confessin'", "I'm Confessin'" and "Confessin' that I Love You") is a jazz and popular standard that has been recorded many times. Background The song was first produced with different lyrics as "Lookin' For Another Sweetie", credited to Chris Smith and Sterling Grant, and recorded by Thomas "Fats" Waller & His Babies on December 18, 1929. In 1930 it was reborn as "Confessin'", with new lyrics by Al Neiburg, and with the music this time credited to Doc Daugherty and Ellis Reynolds. Louis Armstrong made his first, and highly influential, recording of the song in August 1930, and continued to play it throughout his career. "Under a Blanket of Blue" is an American popular song composed by Jerry Livingston (as Jerry Levinson), with lyrics by Marty Symes and Al J. Neiburg. It was published by Santly Bros., Inc. in 1933, one of four hits by the songwriting trio that year, along with "It's the Talk of the Town." It was first recorded by Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra, with vocals by Kenny Sargent, on Brunswick recording 6584. The song charted on ''Billboard'' on July 1, 1933, reaching #6. A month later, a subsequent recording by Don Bestor and His Orchestra also charted, reaching #8. AllMusic calls "Under a Blanket of Blue" a "notable" composition, and says that after its initial success, the song "remained popular with jazz artists in particular." Jerry Livingston (born Jerry Levinson; March 25, 1909 – July 1, 1987) was an American songwriter and dance orchestra pianist. Marty Symes
Marty Symes (1904–1953) was an American lyricist. Symes was born in Brooklyn New York in 1904. His first significant collaborator was composer Jerry Livingston. In 1932 they wrote "Darkness on the Delta", which became a hit for Mildred Bailey. The next year the Casa Loma Orchestra recorded their "Under a Blanket of Blue" and "It's the Talk of the Town", both co-written with Al J. Neiburg. In 1936, Symes wrote the lyrics for Isham Jones's hit "There Is No Greater Love". It has been recorded by Guy Lombardo, Billie Holiday, Al Hibbler and many other artists and is considered a jazz standard. Nino Rota used Symes's "I Have But One Heart", composed by Johnny Farrow, in the 1972 film ''The Godfather''.
