Al Gharrafa
Al Gharrafa ( ar, الغرافة, Al Gharrāfah) is a district of Al Rayyan (city), Al Rayyan City in Qatar, located in the municipalities of Qatar, municipality of Al Rayyan. In close proximity to metropolitan Doha and Education City, the Doha Expressway and Al Shamal Highway run along the district. Many malls operate out of the area, most notably Landmark Mall. To the east it neighbors the largely residential areas of Duhail and Madinat Khalifa North, therefore Al Gharrafa is largely a retail hub for nearby residential areas. Doha's downtown is about to the southeast. Etymology In Arabic language, Arabic, "gharafa" translates as "to scoop up". It was so named because it is a low-lying floodplain from whence locals would scoop up water from in the past. Municipalities Of Qatar
Since 2015, Qatar has been divided into eight municipalities. In 2004, a new municipality, Al Daayen, was created under Resolution No. 13, formed from parts of Umm Salal and Al Khawr; at the same time, Al Ghuwariyah was merged with Al Khawr; Al Jumaliyah was merged with Ar Rayyan; Jarayan al Batnah was split between Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah; and Mesaieed was merged with Al Wakrah. In 2014, the western city of Al-Shahaniya split off from Al Rayyan Municipality to form its own municipality. For statistical purposes, the municipalities are further subdivided into 98 zones (as of 2015), which are in turn subdivided into districts and blocks, the latter being the lowest subdivision. Al Shagub
Al Shagub ( ar, الشقب, Ash Shaqb; also spelled Al Shaqab) is a district of Al Rayyan City in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al Rayyan. As the district houses the universities in Qatar Foundation's educational project Education City, the district itself is sometimes referred to as Education City. Qatar Foundation has played a major role in developing the district. History J.G. Lorimer's ''Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf'' gives an account of Al Shagub in 1908. He describes it as a "Bedouin camping ground" that is "7 miles west of Dohah and a little north-east of Maraikh". He goes on to write "there is a fort here with a masonry well, 6 fathoms deep, of good water inside; it is on the way from Dohah to Wajbah." Landmark Mall is a shopping mall located in Al Gharrafa in Doha, Qatar. Thani Bin Jassim Stadium
The Thani bin Jassim Stadium (), also known as the Al-Gharrafa Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in the Al Gharrafa district of Doha, Qatar. It is currently used mostly for football matches. Al-Gharrafa SC and Umm Salal SC play there. The stadium holds 21,175 people and was built in 2003. The stadium hosted matches of the 2011 AFC Asian Cup and other international competitions. In November 2021, the Asian Football Confederation confirmed that Iraq's 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Syria and South Korea will be played there. Sidra Medical And Research Center
Sidra Medicine is a 400-bed women’s and children’s hospital, medical education and biomedical research center in Doha, Qatar. The hospital first opened its outpatient facility in 2016, followed by its inpatient hospital in January 2018. Location Sidra is located in Education City, a city-scale initiative by Qatar Foundation. This portion of Education City is located Al Gharrafa, which in turn is a district of Al Rayyan City in the Municipality of Al Rayyan in Qatar. Izghawa
Izghawa ( ar, ازغوى) is a district on the border between the two municipalities of Umm Salal and Al Rayyan in Qatar. Consequently, its administration is split, with its western portion (Izghawa 71) being managed by Umm Salal and the east (Izghawa 51) being controlled by Al Rayyan. Geography The majority of urban settlement is based in the east, in Izghawa 51, some of which is situated in a rawda (depression). Umm Salal
Umm Salal (; also spelled Umm Slal) is a municipality in the State of Qatar. It contains several historic places, such as Barzan Tower. The municipal headquarters Umm Salal is located in Umm Salal Ali, about 10 km from the coast and 15 km north of Doha, the Qatari capital. Etymology The first word of Umm Salal is Arabic for "mother", while ''salal'' refers to large rocks or stones. Hence, the area's name translates literally to "mother of rocks". Al Kharaitiyat
Al Kharaitiyat ( ar, الخريطيات, Al Khurayţīyāt) is a town in the municipality of Umm Salal in Qatar. Etymology "Kharaitiyat" is the plural form of the Arabic term "khurat", which roughly translates to "map-like". The town received its name from a nearby rawda (depression) that was named for its uneven terrain and winding patterns, presenting a map-like appearance in a sense. Administration When free elections of the Central Municipal Council first took place in Qatar during 1999, Al Kharaitiyat was designated as seat of constituency no. 23.
