Al-Habboubi Square ( ar, ساحة الحبوبي) is a public square and roundabout in central Nasiriyah. The statue of the Iraqi Poet Mohammed Saeed Al-Habboubi is located in the square and the statue was built in 1971. it is at the intersection of Nile and Habboubi streets. Nasiriyah
Nasiriyah ( ar, ٱلنَّاصِرِيَّة; United States Board on Geographic Names, BGN: ''An Nāşirīyah''; also spelled ''Nassiriya'' or ''Nasiriya'') is a city in Iraq. It is on the lower Euphrates River, Euphrates, about south-southeast of Baghdad, near the ruins of the ancient city of Ur. It is the capital of the Dhi Qar Governorate. Its population in 2003 was about 560,000, making it the fourth-largest city in Iraq. It had a diverse population of Muslims, Mandaeans and Jews in the early 20th century;Field Museum of Natural History, 1940, p. 258. today its inhabitants are predominantly Shia muslims. Nasiriyah was founded by the Muntafiq tribe in the late 19th century during the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman era. It has since become a major hub for transportation. Mohammed Saeed Al-Habboubi
Sayyid Muhammad Sa'id Al-Habboubi ( ar, السيد محمد سعيد الحبوبي) (1849- 1915) was an Iraqi Poet, Faqīh, and a merchant, born in Najaf to a wealthy family. Life and career He studied Faqih and Arabic language in Hawza of the Najaf. Later, he worked in trade, due to his business he had to move often between Najaf and Najad. He described his travels and expatriation in his poems. Habboubi quit poetry when he reached forty, and spent rest of his life teaching Fiqh in Hawza of the Najaf. At breakout of the World War I, Al-Habboubi led volunteer groups in the Ottoman Empire against British invading forces, but he died suddenly during the Siege of Kut in 1915. He was buried in Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf city. A sculpture was erected to Habboubi in the central square of Nasiriyah city. Books *collection of poems (4 editions). 2020 Al-Habboubi Square Attack
The Al-Habboubi Square attack was a violent conflict between members of the Sadrist Movement and anti-government protesters on November 27, 2020. Located in Al-Habboubi Square, Nasiriyah, Iraq, the conflict was one of many violent uprisings in the 2019–2021 Iraqi protests. Attack According to the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, the attack was preceded by a social media post by Muhammed Saleh al-Iraqi, a social media mouthpiece for al-Sadr, telling Sadrists to "cleanse" Al-Habboubi Square of anti-government protesters. On Friday, November 27, 2020, supporters of Iraqi Shia politician Muqtada al-Sadr gathered in Tahrir Square to demonstrate support for al-Sadr. After completing Friday prayers at noon, the group marched to Al-Habboubi Square, which was already occupied by an encampment of anti-government protesters.
