Al-Ahly SC (Benghazi, Basketball)
Al-Ahly Sports Cultural & Social Club ( ar, الأهلي), also known as simply Al-Ahly or Al-Ahly Benghazi, is a Libyan basketball club that is based in Benghazi. Founded in 1950, the club competes in the Libyan Division I Basketball League and has won three championships, in 2010, 2011 and 2023. In the 2024 season, they will play in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), becoming the first team from Libya to play in the competition. Al Ahly has won the Arab Club Championship in 2012 and 2013. History Al-Ahly is the basketball section of the multi-sports club; the basketball section was founded in 1950, although the club had been active before. BAL Champion
The Basketball Africa League (BAL) is Africa's premier men's basketball league. The league consists of twelve teams, each qualified through their domestic competition, similar to the format of the UEFA Champions League. The league is a joint effort between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and International Basketball Federation (FIBA) with sponsorship from Nike, Air Jordan and Pepsi. Its inaugural season started with the qualifying rounds in October 2019 and the regular season in May 2021. The competition replaces FIBA's Africa Basketball League as the continent's top-tier league. BAL president, Amadou Gallo Fall, announced at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game Africa Luncheon in Chicago, that the season will tip off on 13 March. Zoran Cvetanović ( sr-cyr, Зоран Цветановић, born June 13, 1958) is a Serbian professional basketball coach. Coaching career Cvetanović began his coaching career with the Radnički women's team in Kragujevac. In 1993, he became the coach for youth teams. In 1996 he moved to senior squad as the head coach. He also had two stints with men's teams from Kragujevac – Zastava and Radnički 034 Group. Cvetanović spent a part of his coaching career working abroad. He had two stints in Montenegro with Ibon Nikšić and Herceg Novi-based Primorje. In 2011, he was named as a head coach for Ryazan of the Russian Super League 1. Road To BAL
The Road to BAL, also known as the BAL Qualifying Tournaments, are the qualifying tournaments of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The organization of the qualifiers is in hands of FIBA Africa. The first qualifying rounds were held on 16 October 2019. The qualifiers are geographically divided into the West and East Division, with three teams qualifying out of each division. Semi-finals and finals are played to determine the winners of the qualifying tournaments. Format The national champions of each national federation (associated with FIBA Africa) can sign up for the BAL qualifiers. In the inaugural edition, a total of 31 teams from 31 countries participate in the qualifying tournaments to determine which six teams will play in the 2020 BAL regular season, along with six directly placed six teams. FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup
The FIBA Africa Basketball League (formerly named the FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup) was the highest caliber men's professional basketball competition for clubs until 2020, organized by the FIBA Africa and played by the champions of the leagues of the African countries. The league was replaced by the Basketball Africa League (BAL) from 2020. History The competition was founded in 1971. A year later, in 1972, Hit Trésor SC won the inaugural championship. For the first 33 years in existence, it was a biennial league. From 2004, the ACC was held yearly. Notable players who have played in the competition are Serge Ibaka and Bismack Biyombo, who both went on to play in the United States' National Basketball Association (NBA).
