Akron Neighborhoods
Merriman Valley (Merriman Woods and Merriman Heights) Famous residents such as John S. Knight, Senator Charles Dick, presidential candidate Wendell Willkie, industrialist Paul Litchfield, and Alcoholics Anonymous founder Dr. Robert Smith, as well as the founders of the Goodyear and Firestone rubber companies, have lived here in the Merriman Heights portion. Located between Memorial Parkway to the south and Portage Country Club, and Sand Run Park to the north, Portage Path on the west to the train tracks east of Bell Ridge Road, Merriman Heights consists of homes built between 1911 and the present and is one of Akron's wealthiest neighborhoods. Beginning with the construction of Stan Hywet Hall (by the Seiberlings, founders of Goodyear) in the early part of the 20th century, it has long been known as "Rubber Baron Heights" because all of the great captains of the rubber industry had their homes here. Akron () is the fifth-largest city in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Summit County. It is located on the western edge of the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau, about south of downtown Cleveland. As of the 2020 Census, the city proper had a total population of 190,469, making it the 125th largest city in the United States. The Akron metropolitan area, covering Summit and Portage counties, had an estimated population of 703,505. The city was founded in 1825 by Simon Perkins and Paul Williams, along the Little Cuyahoga River at the summit of the developing Ohio and Erie Canal. The name is derived from the Ancient Greek word ''ἄκρον : ákron'' signifying a summit or high point. It was briefly renamed South Akron after Eliakim Crosby founded nearby North Akron in 1833, until both merged into an incorporated village in 1836. Akron Fulton International Airport
Akron Executive Airport is in Akron, Summit County, Ohio, United States. It is owned by the City of Akron; FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 called it a ''general aviation'' airport. Prior to 2018, the airport was known as Akron-Fulton International Airport. Most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, but Akron Executive is AKR to the FAA and AKC to the IATA (which assigned AKR to Akure, Nigeria). History The airport was initially named for longtime manager Bain Ecarius "Shorty" Fulton and his son Bain J. "Bud" Fulton, it opened in 1929. Swensons
Swensons Drive-In is an Ohio drive-in restaurant chain with locations in the Akron, Canton, Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati areas. Swensons' signature hamburger is the Galley Boy, a double cheeseburger prepared using two sauces, and the restaurant also purveys 18 different milkshakes. History Wesley T. "Pop" Swenson started selling hamburgers at Buchtel High School out of a station wagon in 1933. In 1934, he opened a restaurant on South Hawkins Avenue in Akron, near West Market Street. Swenson sold the restaurant in 1949 to Robert Phillips, who began expansion in 1952 with a second location in North Akron on East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue. Other locations include Stow (1987), Montrose (1995), Jackson Township, Seven Hills (2001), North Canton, University Heights (2017), North Olmsted (2018), Avon (2018) and Willoughby (July 2021).
