''The Merchant of Venice'' is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598. A merchant in Venice named Antonio defaults on a large loan provided by a Jewish moneylender, Shylock. Although classified as a comedy in the First Folio and sharing certain aspects with Shakespeare's other romantic comedies, the play is most remembered for its dramatic scenes, and it is best known for the character Shylock and his famous demand for a " pound of flesh" in retribution. ''The Lower Depths'' (russian: На дне, translit=Na dne, literally: ''At the bottom'') is a play by Russian dramatist Maxim Gorky written in 1902 and produced by the Moscow Arts Theatre on December 18, 1902 under the direction of Konstantin Stanislavski. It became his first major success, and a hallmark of Russian social realism. The play depicts a group of impoverished Russians living in a shelter near the Volga. When it first appeared, ''The Lower Depths'' was criticized for its pessimism and ambiguous ethical message. The presentation of the lower classes was viewed as overly dark and unredemptive, and Gorky was clearly more interested in creating memorable characters than in advancing a formal plot. Ōkubo Tadatomo
was a ''daimyō'' in early Edo period, Japan. He was assigned by the Tokugawa shogunate to Karatsu Domain, Sakura Domain, and finally to Odawara Domain in Sagami Province, (modern-day Kanagawa Prefecture), where his descendants remained until the Meiji Restoration. Biography Ōkubo Tadatomo was a son of Ōkubo Noritaka, a 6000 '' koku'' ''hatamoto'' in the service of the Nanbu clan and descendant of Ōkubo Tadachika. Due to the early death of his father, Tadatomo was adopted by his brother Ōkubo Tadamoto, the 1st daimyō of Karatsu, whom he served as a page. or ''Slashing Edo'' was a popular ''jidaigeki'' on Japan's Tokyo Broadcasting System. During the decades from its 1973, premiere until 1994, finale, 214 episodes aired. It lasted through eight series, with several casts and settings. It ran on Monday evenings in the 8:00–8:54 prime time slot, sponsored by National, and remains popular in reruns. The first series featured popular actor Muga Takewaki, a co-star in the network's program ''Ōoka Echizen'', which alternated with ''Edo o Kiru'' in the same time slot. (''Choshichiro's Edo Diaries'') was a long-running prime-time television series in Japan. The title character was Matsudaira Choshichiro Nagayori, the son of Tokugawa Tadanaga. The premise of the show focuses on Tadanaga's death as a result of an alleged plot to overthrow his elder brother, the third shōgun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Katagiri Katsumoto
was a Japanese warlord (''daimyō'') of Ibaraki, in the Azuchi–Momoyama period through early Edo period. In his youth was famed as one of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake, during the Battle of Shizugatake in May 1583. Biography Katsumoto hailed from an ancient samurai clan with a long and distinguished history. In the early Heian period, Katagiri clan served the Minamoto family, traditional head of the samurai that supplied early ''shōguns'' and their government, and ruled the southernmost part of Shinano region for nearly 500 years. Despite his lineage and the promising start at Battle of Shizugatake, Katsumoto's rise under Toyotomi Hideyoshi was relatively slow compared to his fellow "seven spears", which included Katō Kiyomasa and Fukushima Masanori. Ōoka Echizen
is a prime-time television ''jidaigeki'' in Japan. From March 16, 1970 to March 15, 1999, 402 episodes and 15 seasons were broadcast. Also, a two-hour special aired on March 20, 2006, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the '' National Gekijō'', which occupies the Monday evening 8:00–8:54 pm time slot on the TBS network, sponsored by Matsushita. It alternated, seasonally, with '' Mito Kōmon'' and ''Edo o Kiru''. The title character is Ōoka Tadasuke, a historical person who was a magistrate in the city of Edo (the forerunner of modern Tokyo) during the time of Tokugawa Yoshimune in the eighteenth century.
