Akim (comics)
Akim is the title character of an Italian adventure comic series created by writer Roberto Renzi and illustrator Augusto Pedrazza. A Tarzanesque comic book series, it was published by Tomasina from 1950 to 1967. It was also successfully exported in Germany, Greece (where it was renamed ''Tarzan'') and in France, where Renzi and Pedrazza kept to produce new stories even after the series closed in Italy. The series was later reprised in Italy in 1976 by publishers Altamira (currently Sergio Bonelli Editore Sergio Bonelli Editore (formerly CEPIM and other names) is a publishing house of Italian comics founded in 1940 by Gian Luigi Bonelli (1908–2001). Roberto Renzi
Roberto Renzi (10 February 1923 – 23 October 2018) was an Italian cartoonist. Biography Renzi began writing comics in 1942 during World War II. He created titles such as ''Il principe nero'', ''Scugnizzo'', ''Il piccolo corsaro'', ''Zan della jungla'', ''Coyote'', and ''Birba''. In the post-war era, he created famous fictional characters such as ''Tiramolla'' and ''Akim (comics), Akim''. He also wrote nine stories for The Walt Disney Company Italy. Outside of his comic book work, Renzi was an active journalist, writing a booked title ''Racconti mattinali'' (Morning stories). He founded the Fondazione Silvio Fossati in 2007, a foundation celebrating comic book work in Italy. He also directed the Press Club in Milan. Tarzanesque
Tarzanesque (in French: ''Tarzanide'') is a term created by Frenchman Francis Lacassin used to describe characters in comic books inspired by Tarzan. A tarzanesque character resembles Tarzan in his physical resourcefulness, within a line of action that includes an adventurous life in the jungle, the gift of understanding and being understood by animals, contact with lost civilizations and courage combined with the ability to deal with nature. The creation of such characters may have been propitiated by the success that Tarzan had achieved since his appearance in literature in 1912, culminating with the release of daily comic strips in 1929, which paved the way for a genre that combined the allure of the unknown environment, the need for the archetypal characteristics of the hero and the popularity of access. Sergio Bonelli Editore (formerly CEPIM and other names) is a publishing house of Italian comics founded in 1940 by Gian Luigi Bonelli (1908–2001). It takes its name from its former president, comic book writer Sergio Bonelli (1932–2011), son of Gian Luigi. The company popularized the comic book format that became known as ''Bonelliano''. These comic books presented complete stories in 98 black-and-white pages in a pocket book format. The subject matter was always adventure, whether Western, horror, mystery, or science fiction. The ''bonelliani'' are to date the most popular form of comics in Italy. The company was founded as Casa Audace Editrice in 1940. In 1957, when Sergio took over as director, the press was renamed to Edizioni Araldo. A jungle is land covered with dense forest and tangled vegetation, usually in tropical climates. Application of the term has varied greatly during the past recent century. Etymology The word ''jungle'' originates from the Sanskrit word ''jaṅgala'' (), meaning rough and arid. It came into the English language via Hindi in the 18th century. ''Jāṅgala'' has also been variously transcribed in English as ''jangal'', ''jangla'', ''jungal'', and ''juṅgala''. Although the Sanskrit word refers to dry land, it has been suggested that an Anglo-Indian interpretation led to its connotation as a dense "tangled thicket", while others have argued that a cognate word in Urdu derived from Persian, جنگل (Jangal), did refer to forests.
