Akila Ellawala
Akila Saliya Ellawala (born 6 January 1976) is a Sri Lankan politician, former provincial councillor and Member of Parliament. Ellawala was born on 6 January 1976. He is the son of Mohan Ellawala, former Chief Minister of Sabaragamuwa Province. He was the Sri Lanka Freedom Party' organiser for Ratnapura District. He was vice chairman of the state owned State Engineering Corporation of Sri Lanka. Ellawala was a member of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council. He contested the 2015 parliamentary election as one of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) electoral alliance's candidates in Ratnapura District but failed to get elected after coming 9th amongst the UPFA candidates. 2012 Sri Lankan Provincial Council Elections
Provincial council elections were held in Sri Lanka on 8 September 2012 to elect 114 members to three of the nine provincial councils in the country. 3.3 million Sri Lankans were eligible to vote in the election. Elections for the Northern Provincial Council, which had been governed directly by the national government since it was demerged from the North Eastern Provincial Council in January 2007, are overdue but the government has not set a date. Elections to the remaining five provincial councils are not due till 2014 as they had their last election in 2009. The United People's Freedom Alliance's domination of Sri Lankan elections continued as expected. 2020 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Sri Lanka on 5 August 2020 to elect 225 members to Sri Lanka's 16th Parliament. 16,263,885 people were eligible to vote in the election, 31.95% of whom were young voters. The incumbent Sri Lanka People's Freedom Alliance coalition claimed a landslide victory in the election, winning 145 seats, while Samagi Jana Balawegaya won 54 seats, Tamil National Alliance won 10 seats and National People's Power won 3 seats. The main opposition United National Party suffered the worst showing in its history following a split over party leadership, finishing in fourth place with only one seat. The election was postponed at least twice due to a surge in COVID-19 cases in the country, before the date was finalized as 5 August 2020.
