Carl Akhurst
Carl Adrian Akhurst (14 June 1886 – 8 September 1953) was an Australian accountant, secretary and politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Council of New South Wales from 1925 to 1934. Initially appointed by the Governor of New South Wales as one of 25 Labor Party appointees, Akhurst was expelled from the party after failing to vote for the Council's abolition in 1926. Readmitted to the Federal Labor Party in 1931, Akhurst unsuccessfully sought re-election as the ALP candidate to the council in 1940. Early life and background Akhurst was born on 14 June 1886 at Darlinghurst, New South Wales, to printer and accountant Thomas Carlyle Akhurst and Emily Kate Naphthali. William Akhurst
William Mower Akhurst (29 December 1822 – 6/7 June 1878) was an actor, journalist and playwright in Australia. Akhurst was born in Hammersmith, London or Brook Street, Grosvenor Square, London, a son of William Akhurst (1793–1866) and Harriet Akhurst, née Dickinson (c. 1788–1869), who married in 1845. From age 14 to 26 he worked for a firm of merchants in the manchester goods, but his real interest was in performing and writing for the theatre. In 1847 he wrote two pieces for Greenwood, the manager of the Cremorne Gardens theatre: ''A Barber's Blunders'' and ''The Bosjemans'' (''Bosjesmen''?), both of which were successfully staged that year. He emigrated to Australia, arriving in Adelaide by the barque ''Posthumous'', in June 1849. and found employment as reporter and sub-editor for James "Dismal Jemmy" Allen's newly launched '' Adelaide Times''. Daphne Akhurst
Daphne Jessie Akhurst (22 April 1903 – 9 January 1933) known also by her married name Daphne Cozens, was an Australian tennis player. Akhurst won the women's singles title at the Australian Open, Australian Championships five times between 1925 and 1930. According to Wallis Myers (''The Daily Telegraph'', ''Daily Mail''), she was ranked World No. 3 in 1928. Career The second daughter of Oscar James Akhurst, a lithographer, and his wife Jessie Florence (née Smith), Daphne Akhurst won the women's singles title at the Australian Open, Australian Championships five times, in 1925, 1926, 1928, 1929, and 1930. Lucy Akhurst (born 18 November 1970) is an English actress, writer and director who has been working mainly in television since the 1990s. She starred alongside Neil Morrissey in ''The Vanishing Man'' and then came to prominence in a lead role in 1999's ITV Network, ITV seven-part drama ''Wonderful You (TV series), Wonderful You''.
