Akashic Books
Akashic Books is a Brooklyn-based independent publisher. Akashic Books' collection began with Arthur Nersesian's ''The Fuck Up'' in 1997, and has since expanded to include Dennis Cooper's "Little House on the Bowery" series, Chris Abani's Black Goat poetry series, and the internationally successful "Noir" series, originating with Brooklyn Noir, since expanding to international titles such as "Delhi Noir" and "Havana Noir." Johnny Temple (bassist)
Johnny Temple is an American bassist, known best for his work in the post-hardcore bands Soulside and Girls Against Boys. Temple also formed a side project with fellow Girls Against Boys member Scott McCloud called New Wet Kojak. In 1996 he founded Akashic Books out of Brooklyn with the intent of publishing works by independent artists. Biography Johnny Temple grew up on 16th Street Northwest in Washington D.C. In high school, he worked at a reggae record store where his interest in music peaked. In college he studied the history, culture, and politics of Black Americans at Wesleyan University, eventually earning a master's degree in social work at Columbia University in New York City. It was during his second year that Temple began playing bass guitar, with much of his influence being drawn from the punk rock and reggae scene in D.C. Pete Hamill
Pete Hamill (born William Peter Hamill; June 24, 1935August 5, 2020) was an American journalist, novelist, essayist and editor. During his career as a New York City journalist, he was described as "the author of columns that sought to capture the particular flavors of New York City's politics and sports and the particular pathos of its crime." Soulside
Soulside, also spelled Soul Side, was an American post-hardcore band from the greater Washington, D.C. area. The original name of the band was Lunchmeat which was formed by high school students Bobby Sullivan, Chris Thomson, Scott McCloud and Alexis Fleisig in 1985. Lunchmeat played their last show under that name on August 29 of the same year as the group went on hiatus while the members went to college. The next summer the band reunited under the name Soulside recording an album at Inner Ear with Ian MacKaye, Don Zientara, and Eli Janney. The album was the second release on Sammich Records. At the end of the summer, the band again went on hiatus as the members returned to college except for Thomson who had decided not return to college and formed Ignition with Chris Bald. Dischord
Dischord Records is a Washington, D.C.-based independent record label specializing in punk rock. The label is co-owned by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson, who founded Dischord in 1980 to release ''Minor Disturbance'' by their band The Teen Idles. Girls Against Boys
Girls Against Boys is a post-hardcore band which formed in Washington, D.C. and subsequently relocated to New York City shortly after their formation in 1989. The band released albums on the labels Adult Swim, Touch and Go Records, Geffen Records, and Jade Tree from 1990 to 2002. The band then sporadically played shows from 2003 until 2009 when they became inactive as a whole. In 2013, Girls Against Boys briefly toured and self-released their first new material in 11 years. ''Go the Fuck to Sleep'' is a satirical book written by American author Adam Mansbach and illustrated by Ricardo Cortés. Described as a "children's book for adults", it reached No. 1 on Amazon.com's bestseller list a month before its release, thanks to an unintended viral marketing campaign during which booksellers forwarded PDF copies of the book by e-mail. Background When Adam Mansbach's daughter, Vivien, was three years old, she would take up to four hours to fall asleep. Exhausted and exasperated, one night Mansbach posted a note on Facebook, "Look out for my forthcoming children’s book, ''Go the Fuck to Sleep''". Following his post, friends of Mansbach responded enthusiastically, so that Mansbach began writing what was then only a hypothetical book. Adam Mansbach
Adam Mansbach (born July 1, 1976) is an American author. He has previously been a visiting professor of literature at Rutgers University-Camden, with their New Voices Visiting Writers program (2009–2011). Biography Mansbach graduated from Columbia College in 1998 and received a MFA from Columbia University School of the Arts in 2000. Mansbach wrote the "children's book for adults" '' Go the Fuck to Sleep'', parodying bedtime stories. Joe Meno (born 1974) is an American novelist, writer of short fiction, playwright, and music journalist based in Chicago. Biography After attending Columbia College Chicago, Meno spent time working as a flower delivery truck driver and art therapy teacher at a juvenile detention center. His first novel ''Tender as Hellfire'' was published when he was only 24 and received strong reviews from sources like Library Journal. James Greer is an American novelist, screenwriter, musician, and critic. As a screenwriter, he is known for writing the children's comedies '' Max Keeble's Big Move'', '' Just My Luck'' and '' The Spy Next Door'', as well as the 2018 thriller '' Unsane''.
