Ajmer State
Ajmer State was a separate state within India from 1950 to 1956 with Ajmer as its capital. Ajmer State was formed in 1950 out of the territory of former province of Ajmer-Merwara, which became a province of the Indian Union on 15 August 1947. It formed an enclave within the state of Rajasthan. Following the States Reorganisation Act in 1956 it was merged with Rajasthan. The territory of Ajmer-Merwara had been purchased by British from the Marathas in 1818. Upon the independence of India, Ajmer-Merwara became a province of the Union of India. Province
A province is almost always an administrative division within a country or sovereign state, state. The term derives from the ancient Roman ''Roman province, provincia'', which was the major territorial and administrative unit of the Roman Empire, Roman Empire's territorial possessions outside Roman Italy, Italy. Political Integration Of India
After the Indian independence in 1947, the dominion of India was divided into two sets of territories, one under direct British rule, and the other under the suzerainty of the British Crown, with control over their internal affairs remaining in the hands of their hereditary rulers. The latter included 562 princely states, having different types of revenue sharing arrangements with the British, often depending on their size, population and local conditions. Ajmer is a historical region in central Rajasthan, a central part of a Shakambari Chahamana (''Chauhan'') kingdom in 11–12th centuries during the reign of Prithviraj Chauhan. The region includes a present-day Ajmer district and is bounded on the west by Marwar, on the northeast by Dhundhar, on the southeast by Hadoti, and on the south by Mewar regions. Ajmer subah Under Mughal imperial rule, Ajmer was a central subah (top-level province), roughly most of present Rajasthan, one of the twelve original provinces created by Akbar the Great, bordering Delhi (later Shahjahanbad), Agra (later Akbarabad), Malwa, Gujarat, Thatta (Sindh) and Multan subahs. 1951 Ajmer Legislative Assembly Election
Elections to the Ajmer Legislative Assembly were held on 27 March 1952. 134 candidates competed for the 30 seats in the Assembly. This was the final election for the Ajmer Legislative Assembly: on 1 November 1956, under the provisions of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, the Ajmer State was abolished and its constituencies were merged into Rajasthan. Constituencies The Ajmer Legislative Assembly consisted of 30 seats distributed in six two-member constituencies; Ajmer-I (South West), Ajmer-II (East), Jethana, Nasirabad, Kekri and Masuda and eighteen single-member constituencies. None of these seats were under reserved category for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Total 134 candidates contested for these 30 seats. Haribhau Upadhyaya was an Indian politician and an Indian independence activist. He was the Chief Minister of Ajmer state from 1952 to 1956. Life He was born in 1892 at Bhaurasa village in present-day Dewas of Madhya Pradesh. In 1952, he was elected to the Ajmer Legislative Assembly from Shrinagar constituency as an Indian National Congress candidate and became the Chief Minister of Ajmer state from 24 March 1952 to 31 October 1956. Independence Of India
The Indian independence movement was a series of historic events with the ultimate aim of ending British Raj, British rule in India. It lasted from 1857 to 1947.
