Ajai Singh (lieutenant General)
Lieutenant General Ajai Singh AVSM is a serving Indian Army general and the present Commander-in-Chief, Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN). He assumed command from Lieutenant-General Manoj Pande, PVSM, AVSM, VSM on 1 June 2021. Career A fifth-generation soldier, Singh was commissioned in the 81st Armoured Regiment on 17 December 1983. His father had raised the regiment a decade earlier. He commanded a rifle company of the Maratha Light Infantry during Operation Meghdoot and the Kargil War, receiving the COAS Commendation for Gallantry. He also served with MONUA in Angola as a United Nations military observer. Maratha Light Infantry
The Maratha Light Infantry is a light infantry regiment of the Indian Army. It traces its lineage to the Bombay Sepoys, raised in 1768, making it the most senior light infantry regiment in the Indian Army. The class composition of the regiment was and is primarily formed by Maratha recruits from the former Maratha Empire. The men are mostly drawn from all over the state of Maharashtra, with some percentage from Marathi-speaking areas of Karnataka including Coorg. The regimental centre has been in Belgaum, Karnataka, since 1922, which was part of the Bombay Presidency at that time. Operation Vijay Star
The Operation Vijay Star is a service medal for recognition of Armed Forces personnel and civilians who participated in combat operations during Operation Vijay in 1999. Those personnel who were mobilised but did not serve in the conflict zone were eligible for the Operation Vijay Medal. Criteria The medal is awarded to all personnel of the following forces who participated in ‘OP VIJAY’ against the enemy in the area of conflict/operations on the ground, on the sea or in the air as specified.
