Aitkenvale is a suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. In the , Aitkenvale had a population of 4,790 people. Geography Aitkenvale is a major commercial and residential district of the city. The suburb is home to Townsville's biggest shopping centre and is home to branches of numerous companies. Aitkenvale is the biggest commercial centre in Townsville outside of the Townsville CBD, and is often referred to as the second CBD. Besides offices and shopping centres, the suburb is mainly residential and has some light industrial warehouses and workshops in the top north-eastern corner of the suburb. Manbarra
The Manbarra, otherwise known as the Wulgurukaba, are Aboriginal Australian people, and the traditional custodians of the Palm Islands, Magnetic Island, and an area of mainland Queensland to the west of Townsville. The Manbarra people were forcibly moved off the Palm Islands in the 1890s by the Queensland Government, and hundreds of people drawn from many Aboriginal nations on the mainland were moved to an Aboriginal reserve on Great Palm Island in 1914, becoming the Bwgcolman people, who inhabit the island today. Name The name "Wulgurukaba" translates to "canoe people". Language Wulguru/Manbarra was one of two Nyawaygic languages and constitutes the fourth class of the Herbert River languages, according to Robert M. W. Dixon. The surviving vocabulary of the Manbarra language, mainly collected by Ernest Gribble in 1932, indicates that it had a roughly 50% lexical overlap with Nyawaygi. Rosslea is a suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. In the Rosslea had a population of 1,732 people. Geography Rosslea is bounded to the east and south by the Ross River. The suburb is very flat (approx 5m above sea level). The eastern half of the suburb is occupied by the Townsville Golf Club (). Lifeline is a non-profit organisation that provides free, 24-hour telephone crisis support service in Australia. Cyclone Sigma
Cyclone Sigma was a tropical cyclone that caused severe damage in North Queensland, Australia on 26–27 January 1896 and the loss of at least 23 lives. The cyclone caused massive destruction to Townsville and surrounding areas. The cyclone passed to the north-east of the town, creating high seas and dumping up to of rain in the area. The Ross River broke its banks, flooding of the town's suburbs with up to of water. Ten ships were wrecked in the harbour, 17 people died in the flooding, and one sailor was also killed. The cyclone then travelled south towards Rockhampton, creating heavy rainfall. At least 23 people died in the cyclone, with three reported as missing. It was thought that ketch ''Lalla Rookh'' was wrecked during the cycolone; however, later reports confirmed that she had escaped.
