UN/LOCODE, the United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations, is a geographic coding scheme developed and maintained by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). UN/LOCODE assigns codes to locations used in trade and transport with functions such as seaports, rail and road terminals, airports, Postal Exchange Office and border crossing points. The first issue in 1981 contained codes for 8,000 locations. The version from 2011 contained codes for about 82,000 locations. Structure UN/LOCODEs have five characters. The first two letters code a country by the table defined in ISO 3166-1 alpha-2. The three remaining characters code a location within that country. Letters are preferred, but if necessary digits 2 through 9 may be used, excluding "0" and "1" to avoid confusion with the letters "O" and "I" respectively. With the exception of a railway system, Jordan has a developed public and private transportation system. There are three international airports in Jordan. The Hedjaz Jordan Railway runs one passenger train a day each way. Roadways In 2009, it was estimated that Jordan had of paved highways. King Hussein Air Base ( ar, قاعدة الملك الحسين الجوية) also known as Mafraq Air Base and King Hussein Air College, is an air base of the city of Mafraq, in the Mafraq Governorate of Jordan. History The site has been used as an aviation hub since the 1920s. New buildings and a concrete runway were built in an expansion that took place in 1951. Mafraq
Mafraq ( ar, المفرق ''Al-Mafraq'', local dialects: ''Mafrag'' or ''Mafra''; ) is the capital city of Mafraq Governorate in Jordan, located 80 km to the north from the capital Amman in crossroad to Syria to the north and Iraq to the east. It had 56,340 inhabitants in 2004. History Mafraq was first settled in the 4th century BC.
